This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Transmission exploded after one month - 2004 Volvo XC90

Do not buy this year xc90 under ANY circumstances. Had it one and a half months, transmission exploded. Car has low miles (45,000) and I bought the aftermarket warranty. They will not cover the loss due to a clip failure in the transmission, which fails due to a too short lube tube from the pan. Thumbs way down.

I totally enjoy driving my new Volvo. I feel that it is extremely solid and safe for my family. Many people comment on the good exterior look. Extremely happy to be out of the mini van.

  • Volvo XC 90 T6 Still Loving It - 2004 Volvo XC90

We bought this car new. This has been my favorite car to drive. We bought it because it had all the safety features that we wanted which were ahead of its time, its nice size, and its towing capacity. Despite the practical reasons for buying this car, it is fun! The power is incredible. It has phenomenal acceleration even at high speeds on the highway. It is usually no contest, even against other sport sedans. I have had this car for five years and 80,000 miles. It is the only car that I have loved for more than a couple years, and it is just as fun as the day we bought it.

  • XC90 + Extended Warranty = Happy Driver - 2004 Volvo XC90

I really like my XC90. While it has had some minor issues, overall it has been a pleasure to own. After driving this vehicle in LA, i got rear ended badly (the Lexus was totaled that hit me) and my XC90 was a tank. I cant say enough good things about his vehicle.

  • NEVER will we buy a Volvo again.. - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

I am the original owner of this car. We paid MSRP (I know, I know). The car is loaded and was fabulous for about a year. We have had to replace all four tires 4 times, brakes 4 times, transmission, rear bearings.. engine problems, key fob problems, seat belt problem, water leaking... You name it, weve had it. The ONLY thing we did right was buy the extended warranty. Has saved us $10k, easily.

  • * pry it from my cold dead fingers * - 2004 Volvo XC90

i was looking for an suv that would comfortably convey my growing family safely, drive like a luxury sedan, remain a design statement, and last reliably for a minimum of 10 years. there is no other suv on the market besides the xc90 that matches what i was looking for, a year ago or now. 7500 miles in 8 months, no issues. i promise to repost when i cross the 250000 mile mark.

  • Great Volvo - 2004 Volvo XC90

This is my first SUV and I am pleased with the handling. I feel safe with the roll over safety features and can comfortably take turns. The seats are very comfortable and the ride is smooth. Gas mileage is as stated on sticker at around 18mpg for some city/highway driving back and forth to work 30 mile round trip.

  • Its always something - 2004 Volvo XC90

Built like a tank, fun to drive, solid feel and loaded with safety features. A great vehicle as long as it is in warranty and your dealer offers a loaner car. This is one vehicle that an extended warranty would probably pay for itself.

  • Huge Transmission Problems - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

We loved our 2004 T6 until yesterday when we had to be towed from Lake Tahoe to a Sacramento Volvo Dealer ( 109 miles ). Two different dealers told me this model has a huge transmission problem. There is talk of a law suit on the discussion board as so many owners have had problems. To be fair, some of the owners got full replacement including trnsmission, lines and radiator (around $7000 n). Well see how it goes ...
