This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

The car is outstanding on long trips except that it seems to need refills more than I would like. Would like a bigger tank. Also the mid range power from 20-45mph is a little too torquey and you need to baby the gas pedal. Otherwise the car is super quiet and easy to drive. Especially like the seats and my upgraded wooden steering wheel. Drove the toureg first and got a backache. Feels like quality all over. The extra row of seats has been handy and folds down when not needed. Solid car and when I want to take it on curvy roads, it can feel like a sports car. Have not tested off road or in snow yet.

If you never thought of yourself as a Volvo owner, this is the one for you. The perfect fusion of car and truck. As you would expect from Volvo, the safety features are unsurpassed. Just a great ride!

Overall I had an excellent experience with my Volvo XC90. I had some of the same issues in that I had to replace the brake pads and tires frequently, but I do mostly city driving with a lot of stop and go. I had no major problems until December of 2009. The check engine light went on. It was time for the 60,000 mile tune-up and when they changed the spark plugs and coil, everything was fine for about 2 weeks. Then the engine light came back on. It took an overnight stay and a cold start for them to find the issue;a cracked gasket head!! There had been no warning signs, no running it hot, nothing! The repair cost of $6000 made me decide to trade it for the new XC60 T6 AWD. I miss it :(

This is the SUV for folks who hate SUVs. More like a station wagon on steroids. The most well thought-out car in years, every detail considered down the center arm rest which fold back to hold a sandwhich for the driver. The brakes a smooth as butter, better than my A6, the engine shifts smoother than any car I have ever owned and the only negative I can find is reduced visibility over the left shoulder due to the reinforced pillar which was a trade off for increased roof strength which I would trade anyway. The only car that comes close in price is the Touareg and the rear seat in that is claustrophic.

  • Dont Buy this Vehicle... - 2004 Volvo XC90

if you care anything about value for your money. Every time I turn around I am spending money to drive this pig. New brakes, new tires, horrible gas mileage, fragile engine parts, cheesy leather on the seats -- Im sure there are more breakdowns and bad news to come when the warranty expires (which is substandard). Plus, all the airbags mean huge blind spots -- very dangerous to drive without some sort of rear camera navigation system. Finally, the sheer arrogance of the sales and service people (my own servie rep, who is a saint, excluded) is amazing and enough to say "no thanks." After owning Swedish cars for more than a decade, I will NEVER EVER EVER consider anything from Volvo again

I have almost 65,000 miles on my 2004 XC90. It has been a great SUV. It handles well in traffic and can carry 7 people comfortably. I usually have the 2 back seats down and use the extra room for hauling 2 kids and their "stuff " around town. There are blind spots but I purchased small mirrors that I put on the side view mirrors and that has helped considerably.

It has been a great car. We bought one that was fully loaded. Only complaint is that we dont live near a dealer so have to travel for service. We have really felt safe in this car. We had to have break pads replaced too. We think because the car is heavy (for safety) and we live where there are lots of hills.

  • Fix The Turbo - 2004 Volvo XC90

I like our new volvo but 11 MPG and a constant loud turbo noise should not occur on a vehicle with a $48,000 MSRP. Until the turbo noise is fixed, be prepared to feel like you are driving in a wind tunnel.
