This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Huge Transmission Problems - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

We loved our 2004 T6 until yesterday when we had to be towed from Lake Tahoe to a Sacramento Volvo Dealer ( 109 miles ). Two different dealers told me this model has a huge transmission problem. There is talk of a law suit on the discussion board as so many owners have had problems. To be fair, some of the owners got full replacement including trnsmission, lines and radiator (around $7000 n). Well see how it goes ...

  • Wont do that again - 2004 Volvo XC90

We bought the vehicle as a CPO and its a good thing we did. Steering rack replaced at 40K. Audio system failed at 48K. Steering wheel began to come loose at 52K. The vehicle is quirky. Seat memory linked to key fob seems to have mind of its own. There is no power to the pass. seat with ignition off. Lumbar adjusted by a difficult to turn, knuckle scraping knob. Refrigerant can be heard running through the lines as the A/C compressor cycles on and off. Very good sound from the audio system but menus navigation / display leave a lot to be desired.

Waited months for the new 2004 to come in to the dealership but it was worth the wait. This car is extremly comfortable and fun to drive. I think its sharper looking than the BMW and has more interior space. Another big plus is that you dont see these cars on every street corner.

  • A quite perfect Volvo - 2004 Volvo XC90

Have this car for 4 yrs now. Overall, its an excellent Volvo. Did great in snow and ice. Extremely safe, wonderful turbo power. Body roll is acceptable for SUV this size. This car is so easy to manuever even in tight corners that even my wife loves it. It is not a BMW X5, but it is somewhat fun to drive. It does have below average MPG over the 4yrs, it is 16/18 MPG.

  • Great SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90

Traded in my old Jeep Grand Cherokee for the Volvo. The Volvo has many more amenities and features; it is comparable in seating space and has more cargo space. The stowable 6th and 7th seat is quite a plus.

  • Less Than Expected - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

My Volvo has been in the shop 3 times since purchase. Vibrates when decelerating from high speed, engine whines, had electrical problems, loose wiring connections causing navigation and radio to cut in and out. Interior is much louder than expected. Gets very poor gas mileage. Very cramped in rear seats, not worth the money, wouldnt buy another or suggest one for a friend.

  • Great Way to Buy a Great Car - 2004 Volvo XC90

We ordered our new XC-90 for a factory delivery and had a great experience. The trip to Sweden was handled extremely well. The car handled great during our drive in Europe and we could hardly wait to drive it in the US. It is unique in styling and the handling & safety aspects sold us first off. It gets the rating for looks and is very roomy inside with lots of creature comforts.
