This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Everything breaks! Marked low to bring its ratings down! - 2004 Volvo XC90

Wow, this is a great car to drive, unfortunately, everything breaks on it. I normally dont post, but I just had to register to let people know. Here is the short list of things: 2004 T6, first owner: Front (both) and rear (both x 2) shock mounts (not shocks, the stupid plastic pieces they put in there). Motors in the dash for the air. Replaced two of them now. $$$ Driver window motor. $$ The rain drains on the roof got plugged up, when they overflow, it goes onto one of the computers on the driver side. $$$ Turbo is now dead $2000, and the traction/stability computer is dead. $$$ Rear wheel bearings $$ plus the tires they ruined. I wont own another volvo, ever.

Overall, were happy with our purchase of the Volvo XC90. Clearly, the safety features were our first draw to the vehicle but styling wasnt far behind. Reliability has been good so far, with only several little things popping up. Fuel economy has been OK, good when you compare to other crossovers. Its not sexy or fast. We didnt get options like a DVD player or upgrade the sound system, but after three years of ownership and one child, we wish we had. Overall, this has been a good car for us.

  • Still Thrilled - 2004 Volvo XC90

Its been 2 years and 33,000 miles since taking delivery overseas through Volvos Overseas Delivery Program. I enjoy driving it today just as much as I enjoyed the thrill of that first time in Sweden. No major mechnical problems. Have had some minor early-production- life issues solved under warranty and when the dealer was stumped, Volvo North America rep stepped in to help. Gas milage improved significantly after 10K miles and avg in the 20-24 range for me now, with about 30/70 city/highway driving. Never see it drop below 18mpg anymore. Plenty of power for Rocky Mountain driving. I really enjoy this car!!

  • Transmission exploded after one month - 2004 Volvo XC90

Do not buy this year xc90 under ANY circumstances. Had it one and a half months, transmission exploded. Car has low miles (45,000) and I bought the aftermarket warranty. They will not cover the loss due to a clip failure in the transmission, which fails due to a too short lube tube from the pan. Thumbs way down.

  • Great Solid SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

This is my first SUV owned. I believe I am spoiled. This car is so solid. It just doesnt appear to be as big and roomy as it is. Controls are beautifully placed and very functional. It has all the "necessary" bells and whistles without all the ones that you never use. The ride is smooth and quiet. This Volvo gives you a real sense of stability on the road.

  • Shockingly great - 2004 Volvo XC90

We own a 2002 Lexus SC430 and love it. We recently decided to get an SUV, too. This was the one we chose. We love it. The navigation system is different from the Lexus and has some pros it just takes learning the difference (like computers). Really sharp, well designed, comfortable and enjoyable. Got everything but securty. Love DVD, etc. Will buy this brand again, although we never had one before now. It is a different type of fun car (big car fun versus little convertible fun).

This vehicle is everything I had hoped it would be. Performance and styling is excellent! It gives me performance and allows me to enjoy the same luxury that I have in my Mercedes.

  • Happy Owner - 2004 Volvo XC90

As an early owner of the XC90, I am pleased to say that this vehicle has exceeded expectations in almost all ways, now with 33,000 miles. We have the T6 AWD 5 pass with the 17 in wheels. Our biggest disappointment has been the OEM Perilli tires, which Volvo replaced at 17000 miles due to excessive noise which gradually built up over time. It was nice of Volvo to replace them, but theyre doing it again. We love the ride and handling, and the seats support my poor old back like no others! We drive from MI to CO 2-3 times a year, LOADED, and it still drives and handles great. In the mountains it really pulls, even with a load.

  • First Volvo-Love It!! - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

Overall, love my 2004 Volvo. Great sound system, navigation system, comfortable seats and love the 3rd row option. Radio controls and temperature gages are easy to read and use. Only complaint I have with Volvo is mechanically they make great cars..but guys, why cheat on the small things. My rear windshield wiper has already broken, my passenger visor light burned out, driver/mid back area adjuster broke inside my seat (6 mo after purchase of car). With such overall great quality of car, use those standards all the way around.
