This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Nothing but driving pleasure - 2004 Volvo XC90

Paid sticker/waited 3 mos. for delivery of a 2004 crystal green T6 in June 03. After driving three months, simply love it. Get lots of compliments. Functionality and build quality excellent. Interior quality beats MDX hands down. Mileage only 17- 18 but youre pulling 4600 lbs. so what can you reasonably expect. Third row theatre style seats with separate air conditioning are a hit with the kids. Heard complaints of lack of legroom in the third row but that missing two inches is instead provided for a crumple zone to protect third row craniums. Soo how close your kids heads are to the tailgate in an MDX.

I have driven SUVs since buying an Explorer in June, 1990, one of the first. In the first two weeks I put 2100 miles and significant off-road duty on our 2004, where it kept up with a Chevy Silverado 2500. Two days after that trip the engine surged a few times, steadied out, then died after one more in-town trip. 5 days and a 360 mile round trip to the dealer, its back after having the plastic air induction shroud replaced for cracking along the seam. (and a hassel over a loaner from the dealership, which was resolved). We are worried that we now have a lemon on our hands and a 2+ hour drive one-way to and from the dealership.

  • Heres a little history - 2004 Volvo XC90

I should have seen the sign. When I went to buy the car back in 2004, I had picked out the exact model I wanted, then while I was filling out paperwork, I was notified one of the doors did not open. After another Identical model was found, I took it home. 8500 miles later it needed brakes. Seats showed wear at 10000 miles. Then soon after, the passenger door started popping open. There have been numerous leaks, including a cracked power steering reservoir. Many noises started popping up, a transmission leak appeared, the Volvo dealership rarely fixed problems the first time. Now, because of this, at 47000 miles, the car is in need of a new transmission. Volvo now must replace the radiator.

Wanted a 3rd row but owned the Tahoe which was a little too large. Great interior, easy to use third row. Love the car.

  • A Great SUV! - 2004 Volvo XC90

A quality SUV that gets great gas mileage for a SUV. Has a small feel driving the vehicle with a lot of room to carry passengers and/or cargo. Also feel very safe in the XC90.

  • Great, But Need to Stow Cargo Cover - 2004 Volvo XC90

I bought this car following a horrific side-impact accident in a 2002 Jeep Gr Cherokee (I got T-boned). Stereo great, Nav useful, super comfortable & quiet with solid ride. Road feedback is good without being harsh. Steering could be tighter, but easy to get used to. Freeway power is great, but increase the response at takeoff from a standing stop.

Delivered at factory and drove comfortably all over Europe ~ 5,000 miles. Acceleration and high speed driving quiet, responsive and more than adequate. Tame at US highway speeds but still responsive and not at all tiring over long distance. No "truck" feeling, i.e., smooth handling, car-like ride, and no vibration. Fuel economy ~20 mpg on highway, even with heavy load, ~15 mpg in town, light load, carefully monitored. Navigation system flawless and comprehensive. Cargo space superior with two seat rows, outstanding with only front seat row up. All in all, everything I expected and more from a quality European car manufacturer.
