This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Loving IT - 2004 Volvo XC90

Car is fun to drive and I didnt know this car has a such great performance until I attended the volvo experience in Fontana. Driving the same model car through the track, I believe I made a good decision. Reliable, Stylish, Comfortable and luxurish. All in one! Except certain software bug--Trip Odometer reset itself.

  • The best SUV - it had to be a Volvo - 2004 Volvo XC90

This car is the best car I ever had. It drives beautifully and the ride is wonderfully quiet. The engine is powerful and wants to play. Push the gas and feel the dual turbos push you into the seat! It is also the safest truck on the street, both for its occupants and for other cars. If that werent enough, it turns heads on the street and parking lots alike. I cant count how many strangers have complimented me the car.

  • Eurotrash is the name of my wifes XC90 - 2004 Volvo XC90

...because thats what it is. Its in the shop now waiting for a new motor because a bearing self destructed and sent metal fragments throughout the engine. Volvo better be including a new turbo with the replacement. Had to get a new seat module (brain) because the car kept losing memory 3. It took us maybe 6 trips to service before Volvo finally authorized the replacement. We had been back as many times for the engine noise which nobody could identify until the oil seal blew (even though they could hear it). When they did anything at all, it was to tighten the heat shield on the exhaust or adjust the steering (knocking out the alignment). Dealer service has been nice but ineffective.

  • Transmission - 2004 Volvo XC90

This is our first Volvo, great looks, handling. The transmission has a serious problem that the dealers cannot seam to solve or Volvo. The pickup in first gear is great when it shifts to second it seams to die and fails miserably to respond as one would expect that a smooth move through the gears. The t6 looses out in this reguars, plus it is not safe when you gun it and it lets you down. Would like to hear from Volvo as to how this happned and why it cannot be fixed.

  • A winner all around - 2004 Volvo XC90

This is the vehicle that I want my family in at all times. Not only is it very safe and "smart" it is very stylish and pratical. The XC90 is built like a tank, yet it gets good gas mileage (for an SUV) and delivers performance on the road. The safety systems are the best in the world and give me the confidence that my family will not be in danger when they are on the road.

  • Good for the kids - 2004 Volvo XC90

This car is built very well and feels great to drive. Rides really good, and is great for hauling around kids and stuff. Love the split tailgate and the really supportive seats. Great for long trips, but would recommend the larger engine this 2.5L inline 5 is very sluggish but gets the job done if its just for driving the kids around.

  • Safety First - 2004 Volvo XC90

My husband and I chose the XC90 for its safety features(whiplash protection, rollover protection, airbags galore even curtains to protect from glass). We were in a rollover (3+ times) accident in a different SUV;it was totalled and we were too. Both of us were paranoid of being hit by an out of control driver again and wanted the BEST protection. Volvo beats the others hands down. My husband was reluctant to even test drive one because Volvo conjures up images of "boring boxy ugly" car. However, after the test drive, we were convinced that its combination of looks, safety and performance beat the Mercedes, Acura and BMW.

  • Traction problem - 2004 Volvo XC90

Has been getting stuck everywhere! Recent snow has highlighted problem. Great satisfaction of Land-Rover driving rescuer. Has been to dealer before, who said 4 wheel drive was working normally. NO IT ISNT! Will go to an independent if Volvo cant sort it. Suggestions are a damper in the software, or a gearbox fault. Been very satisfied with overall package, but wife now wants a 4x4 that does not humiliate on a little bit of snow, or wet grass.(Hello Land Rover!!)

  • Drove many, chose one. - 2004 Volvo XC90

The XC90 T6 drives close to my Audi A4 Avant without the cornering ability. The acceleration at higher speeds is insane, a big deal for those who spend a bit of time on the highway. I disagree with Edmunds on the third row seat criticism; the second row slides forward and back to create better space configs, and I tested both rows myself - I am 6 feet tall, over 200 lbs. A road trip may be out of the question, but still... Biggest con is mileage, but Volvo makes up for it with ULEV and PremAir (if your considerations are environmental).

  • XC 90 Big disapointment - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

car is fun to drive but not built very well. Have had 3 interior trim pieces fall off, Rear seat leather came apart (had it fixed 3 times) Car hesitates at shift points (feels like you took you foot off the gas) Surgers under hard acceleration, 3rd row seat hardware broke, rear stereo control broke, CD changer had to be replaced, Key unit had to be replaced, engine has a rattle, turdo whines under deceleration, lights on switches too dim, can not see in sunlight. One of the worst cars I have owned. Have bought BMWs for last 20 yrs. I wish I had not changed. Volvo has been no help
