This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

I wanted a volvo since 1988,finally stepped up and bought a 2004 XC90 2.5 FWD with prem.sound pckg. prem. interior, climate pckg.,wood wheel.Silver met. Of the 5 new cars I purchased this is by far the best car I have owned. It was a choice between the Yukon and the XC90, but since I bought my wife a 2003 Yukon XL I wanted somthing different. The Volvo is so quiet at highway speeds (where I spend alot of my time) and the seats are so comfortable I feel I could not have bought a better car at any price. The people at Borton Volvo from my salesman Shane to the owner made buying a pleasent experience, I also got a great deal!

We were one of the first to buy this SUV - purchased in December 2002. Love the car - it combines the tank like/safety feel of the 240, while giving you all the bells, whistles and style making it a true winner!!!

I have owned Cadys, Navs, and Chev Vans. This Volvo SUV is great. We drive it in preference to the our S80 because we love it. It drives like a car, has power to spare, and plenty of room for moving the kids to college in one trip. With 20,000 miles so far we have had no significant problems and only one minor wiring problem when they installed the trailor hitch. It pulls heavy trailor loads like they are not there. The back loads easy with the mini tail gate and groceries stay put with the flip up bag holder. The third row of seats hides away so not like the old Nav that you had to pull out the seats. The sound system is exceptional even without the woofer. This is just a great vehicle.

  • Dont buy a car in its first model year - 2004 Volvo XC90

The XC90 had reliability issues from the start, that the dealership tried to dismiss. Of most importance, the hatch was so loose that it closed on my head! And, when I went to the ER the admitting physician said the same thing happened to his wife (same exact model- T6). When Volvo was contacted, they dismissed it. Two weeks letter, received a "campaign letter" including to fix the hatch. Recently the front seat reclined by itself on to my sons legs (who was sitting in his car seat). This happened three times. Because of these things and that its fuel economy is lousy, I wouldnt recommend the Volvo XC90 T6.

this is my fourth volvo - bought it for my wife but i love to drive it. it has plenty of pep around town. i am glad i got the 5cylinder and the 5 speed transmission. it is really quick. took it on a trip about 600 miles; drove great on expressway but at 70 to 75 mph the fuel economy goes down. it has approx. 6000 miles on it; so far no problems. i would recommend this vehicle. i looked at the acura mdx and the lexus rs330 but my wife liked this the best

  • Discomfort - 2004 Volvo XC90

The suspension on my XC90 is amateurish at best. I feel every bump in the road, every space between concrete slabs that the tires pass over. The sightlines make driving with side mirrors a must; I cannot see to the left and right of the car by turning around in the drivers seat and trying to see objects beyond the second row. The fuel consumption is ridiculous and the engineers have some nerve requiring high test gas.

We love it. It drives very smooth. We had an explorer before and what a difference. Our kids love sitting in the "way" back" and mom loves having a vehicle that in no way resembles a mini van!

  • Buy a Lexus!!!!! - 2004 Volvo XC90

I traded in my 03 t5 for an 04 t6. I wanted to upgrade. Well the steering was much smoother, xenons fantastic, stereo was a good upgrade too. Never had a problem w/ t5. T6 has a miss or should I say rumble in trans, dealer unable to correct. The navigation is a JOKE. A total and complete waste of $1900. The fuel economy is totally atrocious. Ride is extremely comfortable both around town and on the highway. Too much wind noise at high speeds though. Im trading it this week for a lexus. Now there is a navigation system.

Excellent in every respect EXCEPT: (1) both remote control designs failed, and (2) the Fuel economy is well below Estimated ratings.

We replaced our 144K 940 turbo wagen with the loaded XC. Our only complaint has been the Bose CD changer, which froze up...requiring a trip to the dealer to arrange replacement. As for what Volvo built, it is so much better than our 940. If it lasts as long, then we have made a heck of a purchase.
