This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Great Family SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90

Have owned my XC90 for 6 years and worked through several minor but aggravating issues while under warranty. I bought the XC90 for Volvos reputation for safety and reliability, styling, and comfort. Im very satisfied overall performance and this is one of the best highway vehicles Ive owned. The ride is smooth and the 5 cylinder engine is responsive enough for all my needs. On the reliability side, I believe Ford took several cost savings measures and put cheap parts into a high end vehicle. e.g. headlamp cover pitting, rear wheel bearing wear, lug nuts rusting, and electronics problems. Very aggravating.. My 2nd vehicle (Honda Element)is more reliable at 1/2 the price

Do not buy this car, 2004 and 2005 xc90s are known for their transmission problems. Guess what? Volvo of America does not care. $6,700 later, now upside down. Owned the car 7 month. A piece of crap. There are class action suits being established in Conn. and in NYC. Avoid this SUV

  • Expensive All-Weather Hauler - 2004 Volvo XC90

Have had this thing now for 10+ years and 90,000 miles. Went from primary car for hauling two kids to a third car that sits outside and is reserved for "dirty work". Have been lucky enough to avoid any engine and transmission problems but the cost of multiple failed wheel bearings, sway bars, and ignition coils have really mounted - especially for a relatively low-mileage vehicle. Still, the fact that we still have this car says a lot about it. It is extremely versatile, in terms of hauling people and stuff. It has always started and never broken down. And one thing about the Swedes - they know how to make safe cars that can drive through snow! Ten years old and does not look dated.

  • easy to drive - 2004 Volvo XC90

easy to drive, park, reverse - however, visability could be improved. had horn go out on me the first month. if it rains, when you open door(s), water falls out. i get asked questions about the volvo all the time - over all - so far - great - except for visability.

  • Recent Purchase - 2004 Volvo XC90

I purchased this vehicle over other suvs based on safety concerns and size. So far the vehicle has been great. Complaints are as follows: 1. Second row seats do not recline. 2. About 14 mpg overall 3. There is no compass. Positives: 1. Good interior design 2. Good engine response with little turbo lag. 3. Excellent handling for a vehicle of this weight 4. Excellent brakes. 5. Good sound system

  • 2.5T XC90 AWD Versatility, Climate - 2004 Volvo XC90

I love my truck. I have used it to haul 7 passengers and I have used ith with everything but the drivers seat flat to move cargo. Driving the XC90 inpsires confidence. The SUV feels nailed to the road and does not suffer from the tippy feeling of other SUVs. It also doesnt feel as big as it acutally is. Very easy to handle. The safety features were a huge selling point as this is primarily a family hauler. But it also was just plain fun for Dad to drive. More character then the MDX and mouch more value for your dollar then the Lexus GX. The X5 is more of a drivers car, but offered none of the versatility of the XC90.

  • 2004 Volvo XC90 Transmission Issues - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

I have an 04 Volvo XC90 and had the bad experience of the Transmission Service Urgent light coming on and the vehicle putting itself into "limp mode" to stop further damage. Of all the blogs I read after this happened, most of them had negative outcomes as far as support from Volvo. I had a great experience and wanted to share that Volvo covered 100% of my damages. I am getting a new transmission, new radiator and new lines installed. I called Volvos customer service line. I was assigned a customer care rep that was extremely pleasant and helpful. She worked with the Volvo dealer and I had a response in 2 hours of the 100% coverage including the diagnostic fee. Volvo: 1-800-458-1552

  • Handles like a race car! - 2004 Volvo XC90

Great SUV. But, because of it being new I have had a few problems: radio and map go on and off in cold weather. hub cap bolts rusted back struts needed replacement the first month breaks in front needed replacement 1st month. THIS SHOULD NOT DETER YOU. I EXPECTED SOME CONCERNS BECAUSE IT IS A BRAND NEW MODEL. THE DEALERSHIP NEW OF ALL THE PROBLEMS WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN. I AM SURE THIS YEARS MODEL WILL COME OUT IN BETTER SHAPE.

  • Great with a few issues... - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

This is one of the best SUVs I have owned, however I do have a few concerns: Interior - the wood inlays look and feel extremely cheap (think plastic). Additionally, the brushed aluminum/chrome interior door handles look extremely cheap. Volvo needs to take style types from BMW on wood inlays! Gas Mileage - much worse than advertised. Expect 10-13 MPH only.
