This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

I have had this vehicle for 5 months and enjoy driving it. I was loooking at the Honda Pilot and decided to get the XC90 because of the safety features.

For years I drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I finally wore it out, and bought an Acura TSX. I loved it! It was an awesome car, but it was a car. I missed my SUV, but at the same time, I didnt want to give up my gas mileage! I saw the Volvo XC90 and had to test drive it. I bought it within 90 minutes after driving it. It is like driving a well made, tight car, but has the room and view of a SUV. The workmanship is awesome. So far I am averaging 17.8 mpg in town and 23 mpg on the highway.

I bought it 1/06 like 3 weeks ago. We own a Volvo 1994 850 T-5 and have been happy with. The XC90 is awesome both interior and exterior. We bought a used one that came from a 3 year lease and it had 68k miles on it. Even with this high miles the SUV drives, looks and feels brand new. I already flushed the tranny fluid and it was dirty. Dont wait until 90 miles to do the flush. Flush it every 45-50k miles. I noticed some people have negative things to say about the XC90 but I love it and I only spent 16k for it ;-) Take care of the car and should last a long time. The 2.5T have great engine and tranny but the T-6 have a bad 4 speed GM tranny and are known to go bad.

  • So far so good - 2004 Volvo XC90

Great vehicle for a group; we had four kids and four adults on vacation. Drives like a luxuary car. Great interior finish. Why did it take 100 years for somebody to rethink the interiors ergonomics. Three rows have space and flexibility. Only downside is economy Overall, great vehicle

  • No idea of the troubles... - 2004 Volvo XC90

Ive bought my 04 XC90 believing the car was reliable. Later to find out the first month I had it the transmission light appear. the transmission had to be replaced a long with the radiator and later the radio had to be replace as well next the driver side window track had to be replaced then the doors would open while driving on its own while locked. A few months later the steering wheel became loose, it cost me ninty dollars to have it tighten. The transmission I can some what understand because it was made by GM. I thought I bought a car without an American part. Unfortunately not so. This will haunt me for the life of this car. The brakes and tires well its a heavy car big deal!

Waited for 2004 model such that any 1st year kinks can be fixed. Well, not sure whether if there were any major kinks in the 2003 model but overall the 2004 is a great SUV. Handles great, good road feel, plus the Volvo safety features to boot. After taking delivery, found a loose washer rolling along the moonroof groove and the side door latch came loose. Dealer took care of that quickly. Have been a joy to drive so far.

I have traded my cars in every 3 years so as not to have problems with them and this has been the most unreliable car Ive ever owned. It has been in for problems about six times in the past year and is about to go back for a recall with safety belts. Ill have to wait there for 1 to 2 hours for this and a loaner car would not be available for three weeks if I wanted to wait for that. Of course I wont take a chance with my childrens lives so Ill waste another day dealing with Volvo.
