Overview & Reviews
Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.
- Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
- Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

Loved this car! - 2004 Volvo XC90
By jena - August 22 - 7:56 pmBought this car used a year ago with ~30K miles on it to replace a 00 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I loved the XC90. It is so fun to drive, looks great, has great options (heated seats, navi, dvd, wood steering wheel, etc), was comfortable to sit in, and had no big problems. Only in the shop once when I thought it was making a funny noise. Dealership was great, it was still under warranty so they fixed noise and a couple other things (stereo light had gone out). Had two kids with car seats in the 2nd row. Access to the 3rd row was hard, but you really cant fit a human being in the 3rd row anyway. Better to keep the 3rd row down for more cargo room. Sadly totaled this car but it kept us safe!

Love this car !! - 2004 Volvo XC90
By YOGIMA - August 13 - 10:00 amWhat a great car ! Having always liked Volvos for their safety and reliability..we have one with 165,000 and going strong.. This car has far exceeded my expectations. I find it very luxurious and nice to drive. The versatitlity with the seating is wonderful and easy to use. The only down side is the visibility with the 2 rear columns..I just had to get used to using my side mirrors more. I also just discovered that the car can be driven manually which is fun and has also increased the already great fuel economy. I highly recommend this car to any family.

Excellent car! - 2004 Volvo XC90
By pschmid - August 11 - 2:28 pmI picked up the car at the factory in Sweden and kept it in Europe for 3 months to benefit from sales tax advantages then in effect. I only drive the car on long distances and it therefore has barely 30,000 miles on the odometer. A Volvo is for life , as they say, and at this rate it may hold true in my case. I have not had a single problem with the car, and it still looks just like the day I took delivery. However, for urban driving it is less suitable because of the rather generous turning circle compared to my other cars. Still, overall I am very pleased.

Pricey But Nice - 2004 Volvo XC90
By DriverJ - August 6 - 10:00 amWe really struggled chooosing between this and the MDX. We ended up choosing the XC90 primarliy because it is more luxurious. It is also quieter, has a better ride and handling is superior. On the down side, the MDX is quicker and for about $4,000 less you navigation and RES with a rearview camera! In the final analysis we chose the XC90 because its more prestigious, refined and much more fun to drive.

Looks Good, Guzzles Gas - 2004 Volvo XC90
By joeboxer - July 1 - 10:00 amIve had the XC90 since 4/1/03 and have gotten the most heinous gas mileage -- 10/11mpg City and 15/16 Hwy. The interior is very noisy but the excellent stereo mitigates it. Ive had the car back to the dealer three times in three months with various problems. The interior is mediocre/bland/sparse and back seat room tight. Lots of other little annoyances prove that looks arent everything.

Daines-Montana - 2004 Volvo XC90
By CWDaines - June 19 - 2:00 amOut last 2 vehicles were a 540 BMW and Chev Tahoe. Both are great for purpose intended. The Volvo XC-90T6 is a marriage of both in a beautiful, very useful and excellent handleing package. Performance on snow and twisting mountain roads is exceptional.

Ok so far - 2004 Volvo XC90
By scarmydude - June 10 - 8:34 pmWe purchased a used 2004 XC90 in June 2011 with 98,000 miles. We have 111,000 to date. Only issue was we had to replace timing belt at dealer suggestion, otherwise normal maintenance. So far it has been trouble free except for routine maintenance. I hope we got a good one since I plan to keep it for at least another 50,000 miles.

great with a few exceptions - 2004 Volvo XC90
By sopsylisa - May 20 - 10:00 amIve had my AWD 2.5T with prem, clim, and vers packages for 3wks now. It drives great, and the mileage has been good (about 20mpg overall). I like the split tailgate and that the third row seats fold flat. The handling in curves is amazing. My only major gripe is the poor visibility. The small rear window and wide A,B,C, and D pillars make seeing whats around you very difficult. With both third row seats up, the head rests hinder visibility even further. Annoying small stuff for a 40k vehicle: The 2.5T is a little underpowered when it comes to accelerating from a stop. Roof rack crossbars arent standard.

THE MOST COMFORTABLE MID-SIZE SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90
By MattValerio - May 7 - 2:00 amUnless you want to cough up another $10- 15K for an Escalade, this is probably the most confortable mid-size SUV. It wont tow very much, but the T6 is great over the road, quick, quiet, comfortable, and responsive. It also is distinctive looking enough to get glances from even the most snobby of the folks who want to spend more than $40,000 on an SUV.
