This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Best vehicle Ive ever owned! - 2004 Volvo XC90

My XC90 gets 20.8 MPG on the highway, and about 19 MPG in the city. It has always been solid and reliable in the rain and even occasional ice storm. It burns regular, is great for making large item shoppoing trips, has plenty of power for acceleration and passing, and it handles better than my previous Mercedes CLK 320! Something to keep in mind about gas mileage is that you have to let the car break in! This car only got 14.5 MPG for about the first 3 weeks of regular driving, but the benefits were definitely worth the wait.

Im coming off a hideous Blazer experience. The XC90 is incredible. Fantastic in every aspect! Im even getting 24.5 mpg right now and have gotten 25 (highway of course with the 5 cyl.). You have to watch the instantaneous mpg closely to get that. The Edmunds reviewer says power is lacking??? Even with my 5 cyl turbo this thing takes off like a raped ape. My little Prelude cant do any better. I dont know what he was driving. Passing on the highway is like a dream - you see a spot and youre there!! The navigation system is incredible. The ONLY drawback is the premium gas. What the heck if you can afford this car you can buy premium.

High quality vehicle; very large, needed to compete with the oversized vehicles on the roadways. Safety was the selling point, otherwise the CRV would have been the choice.

I was apprehensive about buying an SUV, especially since it was a larger vehicle than I thought that I needed. However, if you think that 18 to 19 around town is OK and 22 to 26 on the highway is fine, consider the XC90. If you like a very comfortable and good handling car to drive for business and personal use, this SUV should be considered. I have been very pleased.

We purchased our Volvo through the Volvo OSD (OverSeas Delivery) program and it was a great experience. This 6000lb truck drives like a really big sports car. MYXC90dotCOM

Coming from a BMW 330 convertible, I was skeptical about climbing into one of the big lumbering SUVs that crowd the roads, and the idea of just 5 cylinders trying to power 1000lbs. more than my convertible made me more skeptical. After the test drive and 1000+ miles of ownership, I am very happy with my XC90 2.5T. My earlier concerns about performance are gone - the 2.5T is more engine than this vehicle needs in just about any driving situation. The XC90 drives, performs, and handles like a much smaller car than it really is. Im definitely impressed!

  • Volvo XC 90 T6 Turbo AWD Fantastic! - 2004 Volvo XC90

I purchased my Volvo XC90 4 years ago, and Im very happy with my decision. For a large SUV, this one drives smoothly - not like a truck. Its very easy to handle. The steering/turning radius is incredible; it turns on a dime. Contrary to a couple of the reviews here, my experience with the acceleration is very positive. I find that theres no lag time between braking and resuming driving. In fact, when the light turns green, my XC90 gets the jump on cars beside me (and I dont floor it). Although I have the third row, I mostly keep it down; my family is able to take long trips with seemingly no end to the cargo space. While no gas-saver, I get around 19 city and 23 highway.
