This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Why get anything else? - 2004 Volvo XC90

Never wanted to get into SUVs becauase of fuel efficiency. BUt saw 18/24 and jumped! Must get 5-cyl trim for all the reasons listed by others. Better room than BMW, much better styling than Benz, best fuel efficiency overall. Shockingly good sound system.

The steering is too tight in this SUV. My arms ache everytime I drive this car. My dad drove my XC90 one day, he asked if it had power steering!!! Hard to park this car, makes a very big turn - hard to make a tight swing.

  • 22k miles on my XC90 and I still love it - 2004 Volvo XC90

City driving, highways or rural dirt roads have yet to defeat my car.My XC is usually moms taxi but when the kids are at school I still love to take it for long runs down winding country roads. It may never match hi-performance cars Ive driven but its still quick enough and certainly handles very well. The low pressure turbo kicks in to make even highway merging stress free. True 4WD if needed. It has yet to be stranded even in deep MI snows.W mode makes for safe handling for us even on the icy roads. Those Ive met that REALLY own one, love it. The dealership has performed as well as my car has. Volvo has been good 2 us. For those who like a car but need something bigger it fits.A keeper.

  • Man, I hate this car - 2004 Volvo XC90

This was purchased as my wifes car but she got tired of it and is now driving my Tahoe and I am stuck (read upside down) in this thing. Rides great on the highway including good gas mileage but around town the turbo lag is just unacceptable. There is no storage inside in areas like the console and the stereo is not adaptable to adding bluetooth or XM/Sirius. Additionally, the controls for the stereo are not very intuitive making it difficult to operate. The rain-sensing wipers dont seem to follow any kind of consistent operating process. To many plastic pieces that seem to break and the cost of replacement parts are out of hand. $180 for a headlight bulb is completely crazy!

  • Great Family SUV! - 2004 Volvo XC90

I purchased this XC90 from an original owner about 2 months ago with a little over 80K on it. The XC90 is a very tight/safe ride to be in. Before searching for an SUV Ive looked at the Sequoia, MDX and Pilot (all good cars) but at the end decided to purchase the XC90. The main reason for that was the safety features (curtain airbags on all seating rows) and how stable the car handles on the road especially at high speed.

  • Great concept; Poor execution - 2004 Volvo XC90

The birth our our third child led us to sell our Audi Allroad and purchase the Volvo. Immediatly we noticed the great disparity in build quality. The front brake pads went at 11,000 mi, rotors went at 34,000 mi, no dealer explanation. Steering makes a loud clunk when turning at low speeds. Several trim pieces have consistently fallen off. The leather on the drivers seat is starting to crack despite multiple conditioning. Gas mileage is about 15.6-16.2 according to the computer. And yes, the upgraded 18 inch wheels did not have the upgraded brakes not where the tires provided of any quality. It has been such a poor experince, both with the car and the dealership, we are considering an Escalade.

  • The Perfect SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90

After researching all the competetive SUVs in the luxury segment, I decided to lease the new Volvo XC90T6. Although the great demand limited some of my option choices, I can state without equivication that this is the finest atomobile Ive ever owned. The well thought out cabin, the versatility of the 3rdseat and the safety of the gyroscopic anti-roll technology is unbeatable, not to metion the finest car like ride that any SUV could offer.

  • Lemon in KC - 2004 Volvo XC90

My wife was the second owner of the new XC90 in Kansas City and that may be the problem. This car has been in the shop more than our garage. You name it and it has gome wrong. The power seat/mirror loses memory every time you start the car. The fuel door snapped off when my 10-year old bumped it, ($223 - not under warranty) rear windshield wiper snapped off while trying to clean the window, radiator overheats and had to be replaced, PVC valve rattles and had to be replaced only to name a few. Hopefully these are problems with the first production run or these guys are in for some major lawsuits and lemon law issues.
