This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • SUV that was worth the wait! - 2004 Volvo XC90

My wife and I had been short-listing SUVs since May of 2002. We had narrowed our choices down to a fully loaded GMC Envoy or the Acura MDX. Envoys ride was not as good as Acura. Just as we were to make our choice in January, my wife read a piece on the XC90. Ordered Feb. 1, picked up July 4, in time for holiday. In short WE LOVE IT. Make sure to get the Dolby Surround and the sub-woofer. The sound is perfect! The ride is excellent (nearly car- like on twisting country roads)! Factory window tinting is plenty. Have black leather seats and on 95° day was not too hot to sit on. The 2.5 with turbo offered plenty of oomph when needed.

  • A great vehicle - 2004 Volvo XC90

I have owned many different makes of cars including Jeep, Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW. The XC-90,however, is the most comfortable to drive. It is roomy inside and has overall terrific handling. I have owned Lexus RX300S,a Mercedes ML320 and other SUVs. Although the other SUVs were good, the XC-90 is far superior.

  • Worst Car ever owned - 2004 Volvo XC90

Consistent problems. Rear 3rd row seats continually get stuck have to bring in to dealer to get fixed (3 times ). Child seat gets stuck ( 2 times). Rear door has problems closing brought in 3 times. Bought 18 inch wheels but the brakes not upgraded by dealer. Also try finding replacement tires for under $300 each. Replaced brakes 3 times already. Problem with turbos being noisy. Have to be replaced at 52,000 miles at a cost of $4,000 which we are fighting with Volvo. This is the first non-japanese car I have owned and my last.

As my first experience owning an SUV, I was worried about handling the size. This Volvo XC90 has been wonderful. The narrower build makes the vehicle handle more like a car. At the same time, the three rows of seating have given our family of five all the comfort and convenience we wanted. We highly recommend the vehicle.

  • BRAKE PAD REPLACED AT 15000 MILES!!!!!! - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

I bought a brand new volvo XC90 T6 model, May 2003. It has been ONLY 10 months, and ONLY 15,000 miles, and the FRONT BRAKE PADS ARE WORN 90%. And, the dealer is saying since it has passed the 12,000 miles, it cannot be covered under warranty, and they also claim it is normal. Ive owned many cars in my life, and I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCE HAVING TO REPLACE A BRAKE PAD ON A BRAND NEW CAR FOR 15,000 miles on it!!!!!!!! It cost me $175 for it. I had a Nissan Pathfider just before this, and the front brake pads were replace at 60,000 miles. What a difference. I am very very disappointed with the quality / durability of Volvo. They look great, but they cost a lot.

When we traded in our 1998 Jeep Cherokee we had three main criteria for our new vehicle. 1) Safety 2) Room 3) AWD This vehicle has all of the above and are all done well.

  • Volvo for life? Not a long one. - 2004 Volvo XC90

This car looks great, seats 7 semi- comfortably, is great in the snow, and will spend as much time in the shop as on the road. O2 sensors out at 50k. Spark plugs needed replaced at 50k. Transmission needed replaced at 61k. Volvo service wont stand behind the car. I was told directly that "Volvo for life" is "Just a slogan." Dont let the pretty looks and solid reputation fool you. The newer Volvos are trouble. Expensive trouble at that.

  • Volvo XC-90 T6 AWD - 2004 Volvo XC90

So far so good. Well constructed solid vehicle with good, although not stellar low-end acceleration. Handles extremely well - reminiscent of German car feel. Options include a superior DVD-based nav system, versatility pkg w/3rd row seating that can accomodate two large adults, large wood steering wheel and bi-xeon headlights. Cant quite figure out the reason why the high beams dont stay in the on position when I pull the blinker stem in - but Ill toss that up to either not reading the manual or a small glitch with the high-beams.

  • Volvo is Swedish for junk - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

Volvo is Swedish for junk. Worst car I have ever owned. Horrible service - Constantly breaking down. Needs a new transmission at less than 60,000 miles. New Turbos. New head gasket. Burns through tires, oil, and brake pads, latches and locks have broken. If you are looking to be unhappy about your ride it is the car for you! Remember, friends dont let friends by Volvos! If you buy one of these cars there is one of you born every second (sucker) otherwise Volvo would go the way of Dodo bird.

  • Among the best - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

This is the best vehicles my wife and I have ever owned. We narrowed it down to the BMW X5 3.0, Acura MDX, Mercedes ML320, Infiniti FX35. For us a boxy SUV didn’t cut it, we wanted something a bit sportier. The BMW was our first choice until we drove it, too jittery, the Acura was nice and a bargain for the price but the interior was dull, the plastics looked cheap, and the outside resembles a mini-van, the Infiniti felt too much like a sports car and the ride was to stiff. The XC90 is a perfect blend of quality, comfort, fun to drive, loads of safety features, style, class, value, great transmition, and did I mention loads of safety features.
