This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Excellent car! - 2004 Volvo XC90

I picked up the car at the factory in Sweden and kept it in Europe for 3 months to benefit from sales tax advantages then in effect. I only drive the car on long distances and it therefore has barely 30,000 miles on the odometer. A Volvo is for life , as they say, and at this rate it may hold true in my case. I have not had a single problem with the car, and it still looks just like the day I took delivery. However, for urban driving it is less suitable because of the rather generous turning circle compared to my other cars. Still, overall I am very pleased.

Out last 2 vehicles were a 540 BMW and Chev Tahoe. Both are great for purpose intended. The Volvo XC-90T6 is a marriage of both in a beautiful, very useful and excellent handleing package. Performance on snow and twisting mountain roads is exceptional.

  • great with a few exceptions - 2004 Volvo XC90

Ive had my AWD 2.5T with prem, clim, and vers packages for 3wks now. It drives great, and the mileage has been good (about 20mpg overall). I like the split tailgate and that the third row seats fold flat. The handling in curves is amazing. My only major gripe is the poor visibility. The small rear window and wide A,B,C, and D pillars make seeing whats around you very difficult. With both third row seats up, the head rests hinder visibility even further. Annoying small stuff for a 40k vehicle: The 2.5T is a little underpowered when it comes to accelerating from a stop. Roof rack crossbars arent standard.

  • THE MOST COMFORTABLE MID-SIZE SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

Unless you want to cough up another $10- 15K for an Escalade, this is probably the most confortable mid-size SUV. It wont tow very much, but the T6 is great over the road, quick, quiet, comfortable, and responsive. It also is distinctive looking enough to get glances from even the most snobby of the folks who want to spend more than $40,000 on an SUV.

I have had this vehicle for 5 months and enjoy driving it. I was loooking at the Honda Pilot and decided to get the XC90 because of the safety features.

  • First time Volvo owner - 2004 Volvo XC90

For years I drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I finally wore it out, and bought an Acura TSX. I loved it! It was an awesome car, but it was a car. I missed my SUV, but at the same time, I didnt want to give up my gas mileage! I saw the Volvo XC90 and had to test drive it. I bought it within 90 minutes after driving it. It is like driving a well made, tight car, but has the room and view of a SUV. The workmanship is awesome. So far I am averaging 17.8 mpg in town and 23 mpg on the highway.

  • I love my 2004 2.5T FWD XC-90. - 2004 Volvo XC90

I bought it 1/06 like 3 weeks ago. We own a Volvo 1994 850 T-5 and have been happy with. The XC90 is awesome both interior and exterior. We bought a used one that came from a 3 year lease and it had 68k miles on it. Even with this high miles the SUV drives, looks and feels brand new. I already flushed the tranny fluid and it was dirty. Dont wait until 90 miles to do the flush. Flush it every 45-50k miles. I noticed some people have negative things to say about the XC90 but I love it and I only spent 16k for it ;-) Take care of the car and should last a long time. The 2.5T have great engine and tranny but the T-6 have a bad 4 speed GM tranny and are known to go bad.

  • A Great Family SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90

Waited for 2004 model such that any 1st year kinks can be fixed. Well, not sure whether if there were any major kinks in the 2003 model but overall the 2004 is a great SUV. Handles great, good road feel, plus the Volvo safety features to boot. After taking delivery, found a loose washer rolling along the moonroof groove and the side door latch came loose. Dealer took care of that quickly. Have been a joy to drive so far.
