This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • Love my XC90! - 2004 Volvo XC90

Ive driven this car since 9/03. My previous car was a Subaru Outback. This car is so comfortable. It has a distinctive external design, great head and tail lights for visibility. The seats are adjustable to a degree Ive never had before, and very cushy. I enjoy the heated seats...an extra, but worth it so far this winter. The dashboard controls are easy to read, and everything is easily accessible. The ride is very smooth and the car handles well on city streets, as well as the highway.

Do not buy this car, 2004 and 2005 xc90s are known for their transmission problems. Guess what? Volvo of America does not care. $6,700 later, now upside down. Owned the car 7 month. A piece of crap. There are class action suits being established in Conn. and in NYC. Avoid this SUV

  • Expensive All-Weather Hauler - 2004 Volvo XC90

Have had this thing now for 10+ years and 90,000 miles. Went from primary car for hauling two kids to a third car that sits outside and is reserved for "dirty work". Have been lucky enough to avoid any engine and transmission problems but the cost of multiple failed wheel bearings, sway bars, and ignition coils have really mounted - especially for a relatively low-mileage vehicle. Still, the fact that we still have this car says a lot about it. It is extremely versatile, in terms of hauling people and stuff. It has always started and never broken down. And one thing about the Swedes - they know how to make safe cars that can drive through snow! Ten years old and does not look dated.

  • Beautiful, Competent & Thirsty - 2004 Volvo XC90

Very comfortable ride. Vehicle is bigger than it looks. 5 cylinder engine performs well. However, the city gas mileage is terrible (15.8 observed) in cold weather. Short trips can get expensive with premium gas. Highway mileage is true to 24 mpg rating. I cant see how the T6 is worth the extra money. Exterior design is faaar more beautiful than just about anything in its class.

  • This is the Ultimate Volvo - 2004 Volvo XC90

When i first purchased my Volvo XC90, i was well impressed. It feels so much like a car when i drive it. All of the amentities in the interior are superb. I love the way Volvo designed the truck period!

  • Dont Buy - 2004 Volvo XC90

I would not buy this vehicle again. Have replaced almost the entire suspension of the this vehicle and the transmission failed twice, once at 60K miles and again 6 months later. As other customers have said, the customer service was awful.

  • Own it 1 week, at service shop twice! - 2004 Volvo XC90

Looks beautiful and hopefully is safe, but had to bring it back twice within four days of purchase. Makes loud swooshing whistling noise upon stepping off gas pedal. Per the dealership, they are aware of this and are working on a "fix." Alignment is off completely. Service couldnt find anything yet car still veers completely to the left. Car shakes if you go over 60 mph. Was told by a good friend that she know three other people with similar problems.

  • NOT BAD BUT NEEDS WORK - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

Comfort level is high in the front but diminisshes as you go rearward. Not really large enough to have 3rd row. After 3000 miles I feel as though the vehicle is definately lacking in size and performance even with the T6. The shifting from 1st to 2nd gear under high acceleration is horrible but, it handles very well. I have the running boards and they will tarnish your pant legs in bad weather. The sound system is very well thought out and sounds great. The same goes fr the seat heaters which work wonderfully. I must admit though I am still upset that Volvo hasnt followed up with the entertainment system for the vehicle.

The Volvo XC90 T6AWD is what a SUV ought to be. Comfort, performance, duribility and price coupled with excellent safety features far exceed what other manufactures can offer. You can spend a lot more money for a similar type of vehicle and you can not buy a much better SUV.

  • easy to drive - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

easy to drive, park, reverse - however, visability could be improved. had horn go out on me the first month. if it rains, when you open door(s), water falls out. i get asked questions about the volvo all the time - over all - so far - great - except for visability.
