This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

  • great SUV! - 2004 Volvo XC90

I just purchased my XC90 about 2 weeks ago and I couldnt be happier. The ride is smooth and very comfortable. It was a toss up between the Acura MDX or the XC90 and what was the desiding factor was the feel of the road while I was driving. I could manuver my volvo very easily.

  • axle glue - 2004 Volvo XC90

both front axles had to be repaired by adding cement grease(thats what dealer called it). This stopped vibration of axle in both front wheels. Also a spring had to be applied to emergency brake to keep it from rubbing.

  • dashboard illumination sucks - 2004 Volvo XC90

Electronic dashboard controls are often impossible to read in bright daytime. The idiot who designed this must drive at night only, or else only drives on dark, cloudy days. This is a major flaw that Volvo should correct (on new and existing models), because it would prevent me from purchasing another Volvo XC-90.

  • better than MDX - 2004 Volvo XC90

My final choices were XC90 Vs. Acura MDX after my wife and I drove Cadillac SRX,Lexus Rx330 and Gx470 and Lincoln Aviator. We then spent 3 months debating over them including multiple side by side comparison test drives. Volvo finally won out because of more European sports sedan flavor(MDX drives too much like my brothers Honda Odessy). Since I live in high altitude (Colorado),MDXs HP and tourq advantage disappears, and felt sluggish. In fact, once turbo kicks in, this car really moves like a sports car. In normal driving, 2.5T is not underpowered at all. This is actually fun car to drive which is very unusual for a 7 seat SUV.

Drives more like a car than other SUV models. Handles very well. Confortable on long trips.

  • Good but not great - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

There is nothing wrong with the XC90. But then again, theres nothing great. Acceleration has a lag but is OK. Third row is a great concept, but very difficult to get into. Dont even ask about third row leg room! Gas mileage is good for a 2 1/2 ton vehicle. Build feels rugged and well constructed. Features like rear audio controls is good. Its an OK vehicle. The question is whether it is worth $40K+?

  • So far so good - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

So far Im really enjoying the T6. Very tight and handles well. My only beef is that the fuel tank is to small (19 Gal) @ 15 MPG it seems that Im at the station every few days. Also the braking could be better, bigger discs?? Not a big fan on the sound system as well.

  • Great Family SUV - 2004 Volvo XC90
    By -

Have owned my XC90 for 6 years and worked through several minor but aggravating issues while under warranty. I bought the XC90 for Volvos reputation for safety and reliability, styling, and comfort. Im very satisfied overall performance and this is one of the best highway vehicles Ive owned. The ride is smooth and the 5 cylinder engine is responsive enough for all my needs. On the reliability side, I believe Ford took several cost savings measures and put cheap parts into a high end vehicle. e.g. headlamp cover pitting, rear wheel bearing wear, lug nuts rusting, and electronics problems. Very aggravating.. My 2nd vehicle (Honda Element)is more reliable at 1/2 the price

  • Absolutely great family car - 2004 Volvo XC90

Have utterly enjoyed owning this vehicle. From the dealer support to the sheer enjoyment of driving with the safety Volvo is known for, I highly recommend it.
