first ride - 2000 Volvo S40
By ewalker1 - March 10 - 6:06 pmThis was my first car-- so excited to have a safe and reliable car. Little did I know it would cost me THOUSANDS in credit card debt to maintain it. My headlights burn out in a couple of months, the CEL NEVER shuts off, the windshield wipers need to be replaced frequently (courtesy of New England weather). I spend all of my money on Volvo Techs diagnosing my problems, fixing them, and then finding a new one the next day. Its really been a nightmare- if anyone has any advice, I would love to hear it.

No Problems - 2000 Volvo S40
By Mr. B - February 10 - 11:56 pmI Have owned this vehicle for about 6 years and have had few problems that I have not seen in my other vehicles. Firstly, I bought it with 18k so I had time to put some mileage on it. I currently have over 200k and have done 5 brake Jobs so the brakes have been fine for me. My headlights burnt out frequently until I fixed the ground. I have replaced my struts with konis and would highly recommend them. I have replaced my motor mounts, cv axle, and turbo seals once. So I dont know why everyone is complaining about these cars, if you maintain them they last awhile. Oil change at 3k not 7500.

Volvo Owner - 2000 Volvo S40
By Ron Laub - January 13 - 10:00 amI have had a few maintenance problems but overall very satisfied. Worked with Volvo of the Triad in Winston- Salem, NC and Volvo of Dallas in Carrollton, TX. The sales people (Trey) at Volvo of the Triad were great to work with. Totally opposite the dealership in Greensboro (Crown). Have referred my brother and two friends to Volvo of the Trid and they both bought Volvos there. Most of my service work has been with Volvo of Dallas and the shop supervisor (Aldo) is the best.

Excellent Car - 2000 Volvo S40
By Sriniv - January 4 - 2:00 amI am seeing so many bad reviews on this site and wondering why all these people are having so much trouble with this car while I had no problems at all - Well except the Check engine sign. I drive this car more than most people - 45K in less than 3 years. It is still as much fun to drive as it was on day one. In fact the engine seems to be getting smoother by the day. I take frequent long trips in this car (>6 hours) and I can honestly say the trips are comfortable. There are some interior design problems such as the front cup holder but it is not so bad that I would give it a 3 or 4 rating.

Good at everything, excels at litle - 2000 Volvo S40
By MGB GT Racer - December 3 - 9:23 pmIts a great car, but was expensive when fully optioned. The lower optioned cars tend to drag the loaded ones into negative equity. Its deceptively fast, not quick. With a few aftermarket mods itll show taillights to most anything.

Have Loved This Car for 9 years! - 2000 Volvo S40
By happy owner - September 16 - 11:26 pmTo make this short, I love the car! I purchased it new at the very end of 99 & have been driving it since 1-00. I really dont get the negative comments. Maybe, as one person mentioned, mine hasnt had the same issues because I ordered it before they came out & it was delivered from overseas?? But, it is NOT the first year for the car; they had been out in Europe for a couple of years. Ive replaced a few things, but for a car with 100,000 miles, thats typical. The headlights did seem to go out too quickly at first, but doesnt seem to be an issue now. Theyre about $12 at PepBoys & theyll put them in for free, or for $5 if theyre not feeling generous. Id buy this car again

VOLVO S40 happy owner - 2000 Volvo S40
By mathias - March 21 - 10:00 amThis car has an excellent response when speed and acceleration is needed. I have put this car at 137 MPH on Alligator Alley and it could have still kept going a tad more had I not cought up with traffic. Getting to 130 MPH is a breeze. Need a stretch to get to the 137 I put it to. Acceleration is very good. I have left more than 1 BMW 325 asking for a second chance. Response from mid speeds is also superb. The interior is suprisingly comfortable. It looks smaller outside but feels large inside, even in the backseets. It is more roomy than the A4 by far. The trunk is very generous as well. The car has had no problems, just regular service and it has 56,000 miles. Best car in its league.

S40, 2 years later - 2000 Volvo S40
By Banker John - February 3 - 2:00 amI never saw myself as a Volvo kinda guy. My S40 was a loaner at the local dealer. Bought it with 4,000 miles on it - got a deal that was really hard to pass up. Ive owned A LOT of different cars and I must say this S40 may be the most competent car Ive ever owned. The longer I owned it the more things Ive noticed about the car that I like. Sure, Ive had the check engine light problem, and it does burn up headlights, and I have had to replace the brake pads, but all things considered, these are pretty minor problems(and in the case of the headlights - inexpensive). Ill hit 50,000 miles this month - the car has never let me down.
