This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen fully redesigned the Passat sedan last year. For 2007, a wagon version of the new VW Passat debuts, as does a Wolfsburg edition of the 2.0T. Other updates this year include the addition of a new adaptive cruise control system, an auxiliary input jack for the audio system, minor standard feature adjustments and the dropping of the "Value Editon" nomenclature.

Pros:
  • Strong engines, fine handling and ride balance, roomy and upscale cabin, top-notch build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • More expensive than competitors, excessive road noise.

  • I cant believe it - 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Long story short; I used to own a company and drove MB as a rule. Now things are very different so I still wanted German and went with a VW. The top part of the engine has been rebuilt twice as the timing chain broke twice. Now I was a LITTLE late on a couple oil changes; like 2k miles, not THAT big of a deal (for other cars). Now with 78k miles the car is starting to tick again and it is under 3 years old. Now I have driven a lot of miles but drive (slow) due to some points I drive the speed limit. Take off NORMAL, stop normal, no driving fast or racing. Also because funds are tight I need to get the most out of the gas. I average (for the past 8k miles) 23.7 mpg.

Even though Consumers Report gave the Passat a bad rating, I liked the handling better than any of the other cars I test drove - Altima, Camry, Accord, Prius, Acura. Before I took the leap, I called the service manager at several VW dealerships and asked them what kinds of repairs they were seeing. Everyone I spoke to said that they saw very few repairs for the 07 Passat and thought it was the best car in the VW line. So I ignored CR and took the plunge. Im glad I did. The car handles like an expensive European sports car on turns. It is comfortable, stylish, responsive and reliable.

Currently I am braking in the car. It only has 235 miles. The gas mileage is 22-27 city, in mixed highway and freeway driving on regular unleaded gas. My dealer told me that you do not have to use super. I think that after the car is broken in, that the gas mileage will go up. I took the car out in the rain today and it handled great it was a pleasure to drive. The electronic assisted steering and the 4Matic are just great. Thats about it for now will advise more later.

  • Beware of 2.0T Engine on 2006 till 2008.0 cars - 2007 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I have owned my 2007 VW Passat since 2008 and initially left a positive review on here on Edmunds many years ago. Yes, I have experienced many of the quality issues that you can read about in the various reviews here, but most had happened early enough to be covered under my warranty However, here is the real deal if your are considering the purchase of a 2006 -> early 2008 Passat with the 2.0T engine (engine code BPY). Now wonder the prices for those cars are so attractive now on the used market: Issue #1: This engine uses a timing belt. You really should check if it has been replaced (along with the water pump). I knew about the timing belt all along when I bought the car, but the dealership quote of $1200 to 1400 for this service was still painful. I ended up doing it myself (thank God for Youtube and Bentley Publishers), but it is quite an effort. I also had to replace the thermostat due (due to an error code .... seems to be quite common at that age / mileage). This $38 part would cost several hundred dollars to replace if done at the dealer due to the complicated mounting location. Issue#2: This is the big one. Please do your own research on applicable Web forums: The BPY Engine drives the high pressure fuel pump from one of the camshafts. The fuel pump plunger is driven by a dedicated cam lobe. Over time, a little part, called the cam follower can wear out and cause the fuel pump to start grinding on the camshaft. I immediately checked this on my vehicle when I first read about this, and yes, my cam follower had failed. I replaced the cam follower ($30 part) and am still driving the car, but now I am stuck. The damage to the camshaft is done and I cant really sell the car without disclosing this issue (would be unethical). At some time I will have to look into replacing the damaged camshaft ... estimating this to be a $2000+ repair, considering what was quoted for a timing belt replacement. This design issues on the BPY engine have been corrected from 2008.5 on, so stay aware from those older 2.0 T cars.

  • So Far So Good - 2007 Volkswagen Passat

I have owned 45 cars in 45 years and over the last 10 years have driven only Mercedes, BMWs and Acuras. This is my first Volkswagen and I cant say that I am disappointed, it has been an adjustment to come from a BMW 330CI convertible to the Passat 3.6. I can say however, that I do enjoy the 280 HP engine and the Dynaudio sound system. The car is extremely quick off the line and easy to handle at high speeds. I have had to readjust to front wheel drive which is my only real complaint, the styling is beautiful and has a great European look. I do wish I had not made such a hasty decision and done a little more research before buying. I did get the entire premium/sport/navigation package.

  • Review @ 16,000 mi - 2007 Volkswagen Passat

I came to the Passat from an A4 which was too small. The potential competitors were either too expensive etc. I think of the Passat as an A6 with a $15,000 rebate. No problems so far but I am concerned with the oil pump bolt that is a recognized failure item. I routinely get 28+mpg on highway at speeds that almost never get over 100. The acceleration from 65 or 70 to way too fast is right now with no drama. So far one of the better cars I have owned. The VAG reputation for for lack of long term reliability is a concern which is why it will be gone before the warranty is. From what I understand the Passat wagon is being killed off. If true, that is too bad.

  • Unreliable, tons of problems - 2007 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

We purchased this car in March of 2006. We now have 34K miles on the car. It has been towed to various VW dealers four times. Twice we were going 65 mph on the freeway and it stalled. Weve had the entire A/C system replaced (that was fun, going up a hill, a grinding sound and tons of smoke and the car died), many belts have broken, various sensors have malfunctioned, electrical problems and I could go on. We had 2 other VWs previously and no problems. Thankfully our other car is a BMW which is night & day compared to the Passat.

  • Practical Performance Family Car - 2007 Volkswagen Passat

This is a well designed car with balance between safety, roominess, performance, practicality and gas mileage. It has good acceleration except there is a lag at <5 mph. It also has loads of storage. Its much better than driving a minivan.

  • Positive Surprise - 2007 Volkswagen Passat

I purchased a new VW Passat 3.6 4Motion Wagon about a month ago. It is a really good looking vehicle and a blast to drive. It has lots of power, a smooth delivery, is very comfortable, and its gas mileage is very reasonable for such a powerful vehicle. The brakes are excellent and I really like the turning Xenon lights, which point in the direction the car is turning at intermediate speeds. The interior is of the highest quality, luxurious, well fitting, and ergonomic. The Dynaudio stereo system provides excellent sound. The space in the rear seat is good, even for adults. I am delighted to have chosen this vehicle and enjoy driving it every day.

  • Final review of my Wagon - 2007 Volkswagen Passat

This, my friends had to be the best car I have ever owned. I bought this used with 150 miles on it in 07. It had been serviced EVERY 5k miles religiously. Every recall and warranty repair had been performed by my VW dealer, not some independent guy who calls himself "European something works or werks". NEVER once have I been left stranded by this car in the 130k+ miles I have owned it. I had 2 unexpected repairs at about 127k miles, one of the ignition coils went bad and the seat airbag on the passenger side went bad too. The car is roomy, fun to drive and great on road trips with the family. It cost me over all 33.4 cent/mile with everything, gas, depreciation and repairs! Cant beat that.
