Overview & Reviews
After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.
- Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
- Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

Best Car I Have Ever Owned! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By dickiet - November 4 - 10:00 amAlmost four years old and I still love my Passat! I wish I could say the same about the dealer. I have had no mechanical difficulties with the car what so ever. The original tires left something to be desired, other than that totally happy. I am in the processes of purchasing a Passat wagon for the growing family. Will hang onto the sedan and trade in the Intrigue.

Solid value - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By rjm - October 17 - 10:00 amThis vehicle delivers the quality and performance of an Audi for the price of an Accord. I thought about buying a more current model but I just cant part with a vehicle that feels new and costs so little to keep running. The only feature I miss is power seats.

ryan 99 passat - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By rmj - September 24 - 2:00 amI have had my VW for six months and have put over 16000 miles on it. Its very reliable and for a 1.8 litre 4 cyl. sedan it is a very fun car to drive. Even with the turbo it is far from a racecar but does feel like a 6 cyl. I would definitely recommend the car to several different types of people.

1999 VW Passat GLS Wagon - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By sdyver - August 11 - 10:00 amWe have had this car for over 3 and a half years with virtually no problems, until recently. While about 75 miles from home the timing belt broke at 79k (recommended change interval is 105k). The timing belt was replaced under warranty, but the dealership (not our local dealership) did sub-par work causing us to have it towed back to the dealer to fix all the problems. Other than this one incidence (which cost us less than $50) the car has been a pleasure to own and drive. Weve taken it on numerous long trips and the seats are superb. The car itself if very versitile, highly recommended.

100,000 Miles and still fun to drive - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By Moo Man - May 17 - 10:00 amThe Passat is my first experience with something other than a Japanese built in 14 years. For the past four years maintenance has consisted of oil changes every 3,500 miles, brakes and tires at 45,000 and 90,000 miles, and gas every now and then. (Around town the Passat gets about 27 MPG, with longer trips about 31 MPG.) The funny thing about the car is that its still a hoot to drive. In hindsight, Im glad I went for the 5 speed stick instead of the automatic. I plan on keeping the car until my oldest gets his license (about 5 more years). Maybe Im an optimist, but this car continues to delight the 20 year old in me (Im 42 now).

Faithful and trust worthy - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By Steve - November 24 - 10:00 amI use my Passat wagon to tow a light boat trailer for my business. I had the tow hitch added aftermarket. This setup has worked beautifully over more than 230,000 miles. Ive had no mechanical problems, and with the trailer loaded with rowing shells, I get 24 mpg.

my favorite car - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By m barbehenn - August 1 - 9:26 amI took good care of the car, followed the maintenance schedule, and it never let me down. Bought it when my daughter was 2.5, gave it to her when she turned 16, got it back when she went to college. Geared for the highway. Turbo boost at any speed. Still gets 33mpg.
