This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Very Cool Car! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This car has been pretty great. The engine and driving performance are the kicker for me. Down shift with the steering wheel padles and youre gone. Dynaudio radio is awesome. Great options, seat memory function, parking sensors, turning headlights and side lights for cornering are great. Fit and finish inside could be tighter, in most new VWs I sit in at the dealer they seem to have a tighter interior. The AC is a little weak, and the NAV system is kinda hard to use quickly. I had a few issues with the transmission that were fixed by the dealer under warranty, but nothing major. Got 42K on it now and Im only upset cuz they dont offer the 3.6 in the Passat anymore.

  • No More VWs for Me! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

My Passat has had so many malfunctions and about 15 trips to the service dept. The ignition coil melted, which put my car out of commission for over a week. The low tire pressure light comes on often. After I filled all 4 tires with the recommended 33PSI,the light went out for 1 day and came back, I called the dealership, they told me they like to see 40 PSI, so I did. Still light trouble. I continued to call and they told me maybe the sensor has not yet registered and to drive my car for a few days to see if it goes out. Nope and then I was stranded on the road because the tire blew to pieces! Short story, the tire pressure regulator was defective. VW did not want to be responsible. VW rude!

Take this from an ex-Benz, Lexus, BMW, Volvo owner, the list is huge..., I test drove this new car on Saturday and couldnt wipe the grin off my face. "THIS IS A VW?" I put a deposit on it right away. Then I went home, did my research, read lots of blogs, (very helpful) and all the other VW model quality issues aside, I went and bought this car today. When I looked deeper into the issue, it does seem like VW has had it share of problems especailly when it comes to other and older models made in other than Germany. The fact that this was made in the Fatherland restored my confidence in this well engineered gem. Time will tell if my call was right and Ill provide updates as car matures.

  • Good Car - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I have had the Passat for a year now and had to take it to the dealer once. We like the car, its fun to drive and looks good. When you buy an import car you should except to pay more more service and maint. Its tight in the back seat with 2 car seats but, I would buy another VW again

  • Mixed feelings - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Ive had this car for about 18 months now. This car drives nice, gets a lot of looks, and gives great mileage. There are a lot of negatives also, for example. Auto trans is sluggish and has jerky shifts. There are rattles/squeaks everywhere all the time (unless Im driving on freshly made road). There are no auto headlights (or even auto-off lights) and fully powered drivers seat on this $24K car. Cup holders are a joke. Temperature control is completely manual (even a base accord will have a semi-automatic temp control and semi automatic defrost control). You cannot turn off daytime running lamps (why do cars have them in the first place?).

  • Id love it more if it were reliable. - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

The car looks great, it handles well, and it is very comfortable to ride in. Find another car that has so many luxury features for the price. The above said, the reliability of the car has been a nightmare. Ive had the A/C Replaced, throttle body, pcv valves, gas cap, interior buttons, shocks, all replaced. Ive had all of the TSBs that applied to the 2006 model just about - and there are a lot. Ive had about 15-18 services since I bought the car in 2006. Which works out to almost every other month (it wasnt that frequent but sometimes it was 3 times in a month).

  • Good engineering but poor reliability - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I was looking for the car with a good performance, fuel mileage, design, and dependability. And closest car I came upon was this redesigned Passat. I was satisfied with engine performance and fuel mileage but I had to deal with too many quality problems. From water leak, multiple check engine lights (some are due to same issue), noises, and paint peeling. I have filed for lemon law after VW ignored/refused to meet with me. After decided to take the settlement for cash and I traded for another car.

  • OMG was I taken - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Yes very nice drive but OMG the issues. I should have looked at reviews, before getting this nightmare. VW is loving the money, cause they are taking it in double from us. Oil lights, low tire pressure issues, engine off lights, and the techs say "I didnt see any problems." REALLY no problems... never will a VW be in my yard again. NEVER !!!!!!!!

  • Big Disappointment - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I waited 7 years and finally got a Passat (after a Honda, Camry and Mercedes). I take care of it but have spent way too much time in the dealership for annoying warnings that turn out unfounded, fixing peeling radio buttons and armrests, or an airbag fault. In 2.5 years, Ive probably made 15 trips there - 25 miles away and time off work. I expected reliability; instead the battery just died without cause, and the "tire pressure too low" alert came on for the 14th time although the tires are fine. The dealership stopped asking my opinion for their surveys in the waiting room. Maybe I got a lemon, but VWs are history for me.

  • Early Passat Review - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Our shopping around included the Chrysler Pacifica, Cadillac STS, Nissan Murano, and Nissan Maxima. I found the Passat to be more powerful, better designed, quieter and more comfortable than the rest. The price seemed reasonable enough.
