This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

Overall it is an awesome car to drive both for short commute to work or long drive to nowhere. Cool dashboard lighting is pleasant to the eyes during night driving.

Love the car and have had very little issues. On the 40k service, the dealership came up with a couple of items to repair and ouch! The repairs were as high as on my previous BMW and Mercedes that I owned. Using the dealership for scheduled service and engine diagnostics, but Ill be heading to my mechanic for anything outside of that.

Ive had this car for a couple of years now and it has 270,000 miles on it and have had no problems I mean I have had to replace some belts but this car is great! I love VWs and as long as you do regular maintenance on them they keep going. This car is proof. It has been up and down the east coast with no hesitation! Its comfortable, roomy , and drives great. It still can get up and go if you need it to! I would recommend this car to anyone!

I have had my VW since I bought it new in 99, I love it, never had any prolbems with it. I am an enthusiast and have taken exellect care, wash every weekend, was every 2 months, condition the leather once a month, and it looks like the day I bought it. Fuel economy is exellent and very fun to drive. I had the VW Sport suspension and 18" wheels, so it is a head turner.

  • Shocked at the problems you all have - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I bought the car new in late 99. 4cyl tubo with 5 speed. Didnt take the greatest care of it and still driving it into the ground. Only issue was the timing belt which cost me $1200 when it blew on the freeway at 100k miles which was just over the suggested change amount. Tip for everyone-DO NOT TAKE THE CAR TO A DEALER! Someone mentioned you have to have the battery changed at a dealer. What crap.I changed all mine and I am no mechanic. Also, premium gas, you are kidding! U dont need it, never used it once. I have $185k and have spent about $2500 on maintenance over 10 years. Simple oil changes-$35 and a brake job for $200 ea 5 years or so. On my 3rd set of costco tires. be smarter!

I bought this car new in 99. I had a 93 Passat Wagon with a VR6 before this Passat. The 99 is a completely different car, and way better. Mine has the 1.8T with a 5-speed. Fun to drive, great gas mileage. I have not had any problems. Replaced the brakes at about 50K, stay current on servicing.

  • Passats Got it all--except a cup holder - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

While I am only 15, I know what how to test a car and have fun doing it. My 1999 Passat GLX definitely is fun to drive. I have noticed that going through sharp turns and quick acceleration with the Tiptronic Semi- auto transmission happens without any problems. The 6-disc CD Changer is great and the audio is magnificent. One drawback is that the changer is in the trunk, but 6 CDs should be more than enough for one sitting. Gas mileage is great, sometimes. When we push the car, gas mileage drops slightly to about 15 mpg, but standard driving is about 26 mpg. One thing that seems to be a problem with a lot of Passat owners is the suspension.

My 1999 Volkswagen Passat GLS Sedan has been one of the nicest cars that Ive owned. The amount of attention it will get you is unreal (other VW owners know what Im talking about). And you wont feel inferior pulling up next to other luxury sedans, except for the Volkswagen Toureg, of course. While the power of the 4-cylinder engine may seem like strapping an 80 lb. backpack on a 1st grader, especially stomping the accelaration on the open highway, theres not much this car cant do, really. Need to pass that 18-Wheeler? Punch it without thinking twice.

This is a superb car. I currently have an A4 1.8TQ as well and this is just as good. The car is solid as a rock, get huge gas mileage (35-38 highway) and fits everything we could ever want to bring on a trip with 4 people (2 kids). Get a roof rack and carry the bikes, no problem. Only gripe - seats are too big and soft - must be for big butts.... Oh yeah, it has killer resale as well. Check the cost of ownership and be pleasantly surprised.
