This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

We recently upgraded our 1999 VW Passat V6, which we loved, with a 2006 VW Passat 2.0T, which we love even more. The Passat is a solid, high performance sedan that I look forward to driving every time I get in the car. The interior and trunk space are so much roomier than they look from the outside. It is a comfortable ride, and the car handles the road excellently at all speeds.

  • A Little Pricey, but Nice! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

The new Passat looks great and rides great. I get about 28 MPG on two hours of rush-hour traffic per day. The interior is roomy and all the material has the soft-touch feel, not the plasticy feel of other cheaper cars. Ill just make one critique: the automatic tranny. The upshifts feel like a manual. The downshifts on hard acceleration are slow and when it does downshift the car lurches as the gears engage. The Tiptronic mode is no better. The response time is slow. The engine continues to race after you flick the shifter. Youll need to flick the shifter 1/2 second sooner than you think you need to. But I guess Im biased. I drove a manual since my first car. But my wife... well, you know.

Ive read a lot of reviews before I purchased my vehicle. Noticed that there were lots of issues with the 2006 VW. drove a lot of different cars including a new fusion, and several Japanese cars. Ive never driven a 2.0T but typically large cars with an undersized engine and a turbo to help compensate dont do well (repair wise) Have owned my 3.6 for a year now (its a 5 year old 2006) and its running spectacular! Nothing but regular maintenance needed. You have to remember that this is nearly a 3k pound car. a 2.0T will not work long term with sporty driving, but if you choose a 3.6 its an excellent commuter and very fun on the weekends without much time in the shop.

I am absolutely in agreeance with all who have commented on how great this car really is. I have it for about a week now and everytime I get in it I feel like never getting out. My boyfriend & I were in it yesterday and we set up the Sirius radio. While listening, we reclined our seats and actually fell asleep!!! Guess you can call that comfort.

Traded in my 2003 Passat for a 2006 model two days ago. The new one has more power and storage areas plus several little niceties. I love the styling and fit and finish. Mine has got the Dynaudio sound system, wow. Based on the 2003 model, I expect this car to be as reliable. I got the deep black paint with black interior. It looks very elegant and classy. I will post another review in about 6 months once I get some miles on the car.

Just got my 2.0T Passat two days ago and it has been a blast to drive. No issues yet. Will revisit in a few weeks with more detailed review.

  • Better Than the Other Two - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This is my first VW and I absolutely love it. When I was looking for a new car, it came down to Audi and VW because I have had BMWs in the past and they are expensive to maintain, even in Germany. The VW gives you more standard features that are options on the Audi. I was very surprised to see how much was standard. Everything I wanted on a new car, I was able to get with the VW, and at a lesser cost than the Audi. I am extremely pleased with my decision. I live in Germany, and have learned that my car is very fun to drive and is extremely fast with little effort from the engine.

  • Best VW Ever (Other than my 1986 Sciracco) - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I have had a 2006 2.0T since it was new and have put 140,000 wonderful miles on it. I have had very few problems with mine and am amazed that so many people had reported multiple issues. Other than the routine oil changes, I did change the timing belt at 90,000 miles which is suggested. I have been looking for a new car to replace it for five years now and cannot find one that I like more then my 2006. The ride is amazingly solid and smooth with great handling. The 2.0T is powerful but provides for 30 mpg highway, 26 overall. Also the stereo is outstanding. Can anyone tell I love the car? I have been driving VWs for 30 years and this is one of the best ones ever.

  • Needs Better Build Quality - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I decided to make a switch from Japanese vehicle to the 2006 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T after all the glowing reviews. Most have been spot on, but I must say Im very disappointed with the build quality. The interior materials have a very cheap feel to them (especially the audio / control dashboard). I also hear small rattles coming out of dashboard and doors everytime I hit small potholes. Otherwise the car is a joy to drive.

  • Still Smiling... - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I picked up my 2006 Volkswagen Passat 3.6 a week ago, and havent stopped smiling since. Ive had many cars in my life, and this is one of the best. It has such a great feel when driving and is very, very quiet. I realize that having a car for just a week leaves the oppurtunity for things to go wrong, but I really dont see that happening with this car. Each day I find something else unique with this car, like the little snowflake that flashes next to the outside temperature reading to help you remember to be careful of black ice, etc. Also, the stereo system from Dynaudio is one of the best youll ever hear. All in all, I really think this is an amazing vehicle.
