This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

  • Great Car, but... - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Had the Passat now for four years and it has never failed us. Car has everything, great looks, good performance, lots of room, but in my line of work I have placed alot of miles on the car--105k in four years. Ive recently had to spend $1500 to replace a water pump, timing belt, and an axle boot along with the 20K interval service. Im concerned that this might be a trend from here on out, but up to this point, the car has been very reliable. One disturbing note--service cant readjust my factory setting headlights without a fee, which I thought was pretty bogus.

This car is awesome, the turbo engine, and the 5 Speed are sweet. The sound system is great, and the gauges at night are cool-looking. I am not usually into the VWs but the passat has made me feel like I did when I first got my license, its a joy to drive!

  • dont be a victim of the dealer - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Like many I have been told for years to stay away from German cars. However my average repair on an American car was always $750. So how bad could it be? I bought a 99 V6 Passat in Nov of 07 with 112K on it. I was the 3rd owner. I have had to fix the ECU, Control Arm and Power steering pump. But with the car this age and miles that did not seem bad to me. Also, if you have a German car and you need a part! LOOK ON LINE for it and save! Example, the ECU “traction control computer” dealer and private shop cost, 1K4-1.5K$. To buy new with 1 year warrantee, “600$”. To take it out myself, have it sent to a company that fixes it and ships it back with a 3 year warrantee, “$168.00” DO YOU SEE MY POINT! I would trust this car to get into it right now and drive to Alaska! Love it! Get the 2.8

  • Excellent car! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

We bought our 1999 Passat Wagon brand new and have been thoroughly satisfied with it since. The fit and finish were superb from the start, a very high quality feel and SO fun to drive! The seats are incredibly comfortable, with firm support, and easy on the driver even on long drives. After 11 years now, we have only had almost no problems, outside of normal wear and tear. Very good gas mileage as well. Very happy with this car!

  • Just say no to SUVs by a VW - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

We purchased this car brand new 4 years ago. It was my first "four-door family car" but I insisted on a manual trans for a sporty feel. I love the get-up and go. Someone tailgaiting? Put it in fourth and watch them disappear in your review mirror. My friends loved the leg room especially in back. Now it carries 2 kids in carseats. Followed the scheduled maintenance and the only problem was with the keyless remote for the trunk lock. My husband thinks it is time to upgrade to a monsterous SUV. Over my dead body! I love my VW! Ive had sport vehicles all my life -- this car by far is the most fun with the most pep!

i like this car alot although the tiptronic mode of it is verry un responsive and hard to control.

  • German Engineered Passat GLX - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

My last car was a very nice Acura TL but I like my Certified Pre Owned VW Passat GLX much better. At high speeds it holds the road better, reacts less to cross winds, puddles and rough road surfaces. It feels hunkered down, stable and capable of much higher speed. The seating is better bolstered, firm and much more comfortable for long trips. The 8 speaker sound system came alive when I added a VW 6-disc changer. The trunk is huge and I like being able to drop the rear seats (60/40) to accomodate cargo. The 5-Speed tiptronic is a blast to use. Love the heated seats, moonroof, rain sensing wipers, memory seats and trip information computer. Engineered for the Autobahn.

  • Wonderful car, electronic problems - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Car purchased new, 4 yrs. old, 58K miles. Love the design, roominess and build quality. Ride/handling are comfortable, sophisticated. Accel is OK, turbo kicks in late, power up hills is sluggish and needs Tiptronic assist. Transmission doesnt shift back up quickly enough after sustained lower-gear driving. Gas econ is GREAT (34 mpg @ 72 mph-hwy!). Overall avg mpg: 26. Problems have been electronic: failed engine temp sensor, trunk light switch, dash lights. SHOCKING failure (at 4 yrs): electronic firing regulator shorted out; diagnosis + part ($348.) + labor = $600! What else electronic may fail next?? VW techs say: water pumps go out at around 60K.

  • Love It! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I got this car with 130,000 kms. last year. I took it in for service today with 206,000 with its first problem (a faulty hazard light switch). During that time it got me from Alberta to Boston, and all over Canada at 130km/hr+ with no issues/maintenance other than oil changes. It runs smoothly, ALWAYS starts (even in -30C), and goes like a bat out of H. My previous car was a 94 VR6. That one lasted 400,000 miles and Im thinking this one will too.

  • After 6 years, I still adore this car - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I love this car. The exterior style still looks as good as the day I got it. I have only ever had to have minor repairs done. It has to have the most comfortable and roomy interior -- for front and rear passengers -- as any car Ive experienced. Not to mention how fun to drive it is.
