This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

    1. Shifts were imperceptive and smooth (needed to mute stereo to listen to engine). 6-speed tiptronic transmission was more responsive than 5-speed. Didn’t do much sport mode since I like to move between tip and auto mode side to side. Downshifts came pretty quickly. 2. Handling and steering adjectives: smooth, crisp, precise, responsive, flat, agile, tenacious, communicative, and confident. This car was fun to hustle. Best “cut and thrust” sedan I’ve ever driven. 3. Sensation of thrust not acceleration. Point the 2.0T down a ramp, hit the gas and you literally rocket forward until you take your foot off the gas. 85 mph passed by before I had merged. Felt similar to beginning of take off roll in a jetliner.

Take this from an ex-Benz, Lexus, BMW, Volvo owner, the list is huge..., I test drove this new car on Saturday and couldnt wipe the grin off my face. "THIS IS A VW?" I put a deposit on it right away. Then I went home, did my research, read lots of blogs, (very helpful) and all the other VW model quality issues aside, I went and bought this car today. When I looked deeper into the issue, it does seem like VW has had it share of problems especailly when it comes to other and older models made in other than Germany. The fact that this was made in the Fatherland restored my confidence in this well engineered gem. Time will tell if my call was right and Ill provide updates as car matures.

I have had the Passat for a year now and had to take it to the dealer once. We like the car, its fun to drive and looks good. When you buy an import car you should except to pay more more service and maint. Its tight in the back seat with 2 car seats but, I would buy another VW again

I had a New Beetle for six months before I traded it in on a Passat. It was the smartest thing I have done in a while! The Passat is a great car, it rides smooth and handles well( although not quite as well as the 06 Jetta) and is very roomy inside. My husband is a big guy who had an Explorer before this car and swore he would never get another sedan as they were difficult for him to get in and out of. Not so with this car. We both own one, and we both really enjoy its features and the fun we have driving them. I am very happy I made the switch in cars!

  • DO NOT BUY - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

We bought the car from my brother-in-law who bought it new and did regular maintenance like clockwork only used synthetic oil. It had 90k miles on it when we bought and was in immaculate condition besides the peeling on inside front doors. We drove 150 miles and lost oil pressure had to be towed 150 miles from home. Dealer said needed new motor $7500 and that didnt include turbo replacement. We went with an autorepair shop instead and spent 5500. Within the next 150 miles the oil was leaking. Turned out to be rear main seal and that is another 1200. We have 15k in a used car with only 90k miles on it.......Ridiculous. VW should do something about all the problems. This should be covered under lemon law.

  • What a car! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

The 2006 Volkswagen Passat is a great improvment from the previous model. It has more power, more features, more everything. Suprisingly the vehicle did not increase in weight or suffer with regards to fuel economy, in fact, quite the opposite. I would say that the 4-cylinder model closely matches some of the 6-cylinders that are available at this moment. I cannot even imagine what the 6-cylinder will do.

There are no matches for this car in this class and price range. I would even pick this over BMW 3-Series. The engine, even though its turbo, feels like V6, there is no hesitation, and it picks up speed flawlessly. Interior is like a soundproof music studio, no noise, except some wind noise at high speeds. Ride quality is impeccable. It is solid on straight aways, and cornering is supple, even though theres slight body lean in extreme cornering. The car stops on the dime and without any nose dive. Interior designers must be blushing from all the praise at VW. It is interior that looks like $40-$50K cars interior. Heated seats, mirrors, 6- speed auto, all windows auto up/down feature, much more

  • Avoid like plague! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Its a question of when and not if with regards to problems you will have with this car. I averaged a trip to the dealership every single month I had the car. Countless hours of my time wasted on getting all sorts of problems fixed. tire wheel bearing, reflash of radio, reflash of software, transmission valve, cam shaft, fuel injectors, spark plug, broken low horn, broken left speaker (non-standard speaker size so no aftermarking without fabrication), peeling of paint on radio, hard down shifting, cracked cv joint and of course, the excessive burning of oil! (well over a quart every 1k miles, was told this was normal! oh come on!) unless you like living at vw dealerships, AVOID!!!

  • Best Passat ever - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I never considered a VW, until I drove the new Passat. This is an awsome car. Pros: 6-speed transmission, key fob, auto hold, ESP, electronic parking brake, AC storage-glovebox & center console, 4-cylinder engine w/turbo, 8 speakers dyno audio, 8 air bags, LED tail lights...too many things to list. Cons: none so far.

  • Love It! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This is my third and favorite Passat. I have owned the B5 (00), B5.5 (02), and now the B6 (06). VW has really stepped it up with the new 3.6L Passat. I purchased mine with the Sport Package #1, Black on Black with the 18" Samas (best option IMHO for someone looking for a car that drives and feels like a sports car). I test drove the Acura TL, Audi A4, and BMW 325 for good measure, but IMO the Passat won in power, refinement, looks, and value for money. Maybe I am biased towards German (VW) engineering, but you would make a BIG mistake by not giving this car a serious look.
