This Year's Model Updates:

For 2003, a base GL sedan and wagon are available. Think of the GL as a GLS 1.8T for buyers who don't require any extras like alloy wheels, leather upholstery, seat heaters or a sunroof. Meanwhile, alloy wheels and sunroof are now standard on GLS models. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system will not be offered on GLS V6 models, forcing interested buyers to cross the 30-grand line; however, VW has made stability control (ESP) optional on all Passats (except the W8, which has this standard). Also this year, you'll be able to get W8 sedans and wagons with a six-speed manual transmission and a sport package that includes a firmer suspension and the requisite 17-inch wheels. Lastly, the standard stereo head unit gets backlighting for the buttons.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.

Ive been a Honda man until now, but wanted more features and wanted a wagon. Driving this car is the ultimate for me. Ive never experienced such luxury for $25K! Its quick (although I wish Id gotten the 5- speed manual...the Tiptronic accentuates the turbo lag), sexy looking, incredibly comfortable on long road trips, and it can outhaul my dads Grand Cherokee in cargo! I havent had one problem (yet...it looks like others have had lots!), and I have recommended this car to family and friends!

This car is truly an amazing vehicle, from the comfort and control to the stability and the safety you feel driving such a powerful vehicle. I purchased my car with 31,000 miles and have since put 9,000 on in less than one year because I simply love driving it!

  • Best fit for me - 2003 Volkswagen Passat

My favorite wagon is the Audi A4 1.8t (I used to drive the previous model). However looking at the passat, the GLS has all the options, important to me and it is 10k less than the Audi. If I wanted more options and 4wd I would definitely go for the Audi, but 10k is alot of money. The Passat drives great, has enough power and is very comfortable. Gas milage is great even with my drive style

  • GREAT sedan. - 2003 Volkswagen Passat

I bought this car last January and Ive been really impressed so far. The fuel economy isnt great, but if you use premium unleaded (which your supposed to use) you should see about 29mpg hwy and about 20 city. Car looks very euro which is a plus. 2003 is the last year they stopped making the classic European style and they started making them look more like an electric razor on wheels. 2003 is the best year for this car!

  • Best car Ive ever owned ... - 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Mind you, Ive only had it for three weeks, but I absolutely love this car. The only problem encountered thus far was the MIL light going on less than 24 hours after I bought it. Dealer said a hose came disconnected, and it was fixed in 15 minutes (hope next service call is that attentive!). Have driven it on snow and ice, and it handles like a dream. This car was MADE for states with terrain like Colorado. Snow, ice, mountain passes, dirt roads ... it can take it all. Clean it up, and you can take it on the town. Fiance says she feels like shes riding in a luxury automobile when she rides in it. For the price, I dont think you can come closer to driving perfection.

  • I get so many compliments! - 2003 Volkswagen Passat

At the risk of jinxing myself. . . I *love* the car. I have 10K miles on it to date and the only problem was a trouble light that was fixed in a quick (free) visit to the dealer. Shell cruise at 85 all day no problem, eats traffic on the highway around town. So quiet I have to use the cruise to keep from speeding. Had to get used to downshifting more to pass -- can be sluggish in wrong gear. So pretty, people stop me on the pking lot to tell me. Great winter car with heated seats and ASR for ice.

  • Luxury on a shoestring - 2003 Volkswagen Passat

We looked at a lot of cars, from budget Subaru to opulent BMW 500 series. The Passat won out, not because it was the best at any one thing, but because it had more good things in one package: comfort, convenience, driveability, roominess. And the wagon is easier to parallel park than any other car Ive owned. GLX is not exactly cheap, but for the money, it gives you more than most other cars in its class.
