This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Great Choice - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This is essentially the perfect car. It has the power, the styling, the quality, and the design to justify its slightly-higher-than-the-competitors price. The safety ratings are excellent (which was a major point), and finally, a it is a cheap vehicle with standard stability control! It also handles decently considering the rubber its got and the fact that its really a family sedan. There has not been one quality misstep - nothings come loose, everything functions perfectly - all that despite the hard use it endures. The interior and trunk are much larger than one would be lead to think by looking at the exterior. If only you could get the wagon with a manual transmission.

I have had it for couple of weeks and my experience so far is good. My Value Edition Passat has all of the options that I required and it drives well too. Setting the display options in the Value Edition is a nightmare though. Overall the car runs and handles well.

If you really like this car, then make sure you have a bumper-2-bumper warranty, otherwise you are on for a rather sour treat. The 2.0T engine is amazing, but the rest of the electronic components are so below standards ITS RIDICULOUS!. This car has so many electronic/software bugs, its crazy. Just go to the online communities and youll see for yourself. Common problems with this car (2006-up): Evap purge valve clogging, A/C Condenser failure, Steering wheel lock defective(very unsafe), gas cap defective, TPMS miss-reading, Radio unit errors, and the list goes on, and on.

I test drove the VW 2.0T with the six speed manual and was sold. This has got to be the slickest drivetrain Ive ever driven. Exterior fit and finish are great and this is a really good looking car. However, you really have to love these cars to put up with the same old VW issues. I have 20K on the car and have had 3 oil changes, yet have had to add almost 2 quarts of oil over that period! Hello - this is 2006 not 1966! I have yet to find a valet or car wash attendant that knows how to set or disengage the stupid electric parking brake. A/C is inadequate if car spends any time parked in the sun. Dashboard rattles. This is my fourth VW since 1979 and some things never change.

  • Yet to be discovered value; Grab one! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This car has great performance, safety, reasonable gas mileage, fit & finish. Volkswagen has hit a homerun with this one. I had the opportunity to compare this car to a BMW 325i and a Honda Accord EX on a closed course and fell in love with the Passat. I have always appreciated Volkswagens appearance, but the car just seemed boring. With the intro of the 06 Passat FSI 2.0T this has become a thing of the past. I love the look (especially with the 18- inch Chicago wheels). The car handles amazingly, I implore you to accelerate through that next bend as the ESP dares you to push it to its limits. The interior details rise above the competition with the Multifunction computer, smart-key, to the multi-cupholders.

  • Looks Good. Huge Headache! DONT BUY A 2006 PASSAT!! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I hate this car! I am currently selling it "AS IS". I have spent over $5K in the last 2 years that I have owned it. I like the way it looks and that is it! This car has been nothing but problems!!! The Check engine lights is always on. As soon as it gets out of the shop, it goes right back in for something completely different. There are no "cheap" repairs on this car. Nobody but a VW repair shop can work on them, and then they charge an arm and leg! If you live in a small town, it impossible to find someone who even knows how to change the oil properly. Plus they cost $150.00! Will by buying a Toyota Camry this time. NEVER WILL I BUY A VW!!

  • Having no fun with VW - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I agree with the majority of other reviews. There are a few good points (mileage, fun to drive, roominess) but it stops there. This vehicle is junk. I have experienced many of the issues mentioned, as well as catalytic converter self destructing at 81k miles. I owed a Scirocco 25 years ago. Same deal - fun to drive but unrelenting issues. Swore at the time, no more VWs. The wife talked me into this, but never, never again.

  • So far, so good - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I have been driving this baby for three months. It has a great ride. People are blown-away that this is the base model. All the sensors work (yes, even the tire pressure one). Watch out, this is a big car. It has more blind spots than I had expected. Its shifting is smooth. The parking brake and hill assist are nice. The guy whos getting 37 mpg on the highway must be driving like an old lady though. Im averaging 25-27 overall, and maybe 32 mpg if driving highway only. How can you not cruise at 80 mph? Thats so easy in this ride. Go for the alloy Tango wheels. They are a pretty good deal for an upgrade. To the comment about the autolocks - you can modify the settings with the computer. Just read the manual. Its slightly smaller than the bible.

  • Excellent performance with trade offs - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

The car has been very reliable and handles well. A small transmission fix and a console trim door replacement when new. Almost 3 years and 38K miles later and no other repairs. Ive fixed a couple rattles in the IP. Oil changes are expensive, about $80 every 7500 miles at the dealership but the service experience is excellent. Comfort seats even in leather are adequate at best but far from comfortable. Air conditioning is marginal, inadequate above 90, and I replace cabin filter annually.

  • Caveat Emptor- VW Passat - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I am not a first time VW owner. I have owned 7 VW’s over the years (’68 Karmann Ghia, ‘84 Scirocco, ‘82 Rabbit (petrol), ‘88, Camper, ‘93 Jetta GLX, ‘97 Passat, and my current 2006 Passat 2.0T). I have been a loyal VW customer through the good, bad, and the ugly. My VW opinion changed forever after my recent VW purchase : 2006 Passat 2.0t with a 6 speed manual. The car not only left me stranded on the 101 at 3 am in the middle of nowhere California but it caught fire minutes after the car shut off
