This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

I love my 99 Passat. The V6 engine is like butter, 5 speed manual transmission is fun and we have racked up 57000 miles on it on our long trips across Texas. The only problems I ever had with the car was the CD changer (didnt work after 2 yrs), and most importantly, whenever I turned off the AC and turned on the fan the smell from the vents was bad. We took it in twice for the smell during the very limited 2 yr/24000 mi warranty and all that could be done was to take the oxygen out of the car to kill any possible mold growing in the system. The problem was back after 3 months.

A great car even for a big guy. Plenty of legroom. Yes, the cupholders are terrible, but I dont care. The manual tranny is great and the engine is totally responsive to even a light foot. Definately a keeper. Engine and tranny noise are non-existant in the cabin. Going from an American vehicle to this car is like going from dark to light in comparison...tight and controlled! Hopefully, the fun will live beyond the 2 year/24000 mile warranty.

Car overall runs very good compare to Honda or Toyota 99. Grips to the road and solid feel. So far no problems and regularly change the oil.

I just bought my 1999 Passat three days ago, and it has well over 100,000 miles on it. I bought it from the original owner who kept the car as clean as a show room model car. I have a 2.8 litre V6 30 valve engine with a rare 5-speed transmission. I also have heated front seats, heated side mirrors, leather, sunroof, rear window shade, and every option I believe you can get. The 5-speed transmission is well worth the time, as I like 4 door performance sedans, the Maxima was another choice that I was considering, but when it comes to build quality and ride, i think the Passat took it hands down. On the highway the car is nearly flawless, hearing nothing but the sound of your own voice saying how happy you are to own this machine. I will buy another Passat.

Very good performance, safety and looks great! The cup holder is the only drawback, but it does work.

I love this car. It was the only car I could find with all the features I wanted for the price I was willing to pay.

I bought this car new in 1999, coming up on 9th anniversary. It has been the best car Ive ever owned by far. Aside from routine maintenance, Ive replaced the water pump and the timing belt. Thats it. Gets 26 mpg city, 36+ mpg highway, with standard transmission and regular gas (although VW recommends premium). It is now well north of 150K miles and still runs beautifully. No rust. No complaints. And lots of zip too! Has a few features (like the sunroof) that now cost a lot more.

Bought it new and after 60K have nothing but praise for this vehicle, and the warrantee that came with it. I havent paid for a thing other than gas, oil, breaks and new tires. A (slightly) noisy water pump was replaced for free under the 100K drive train warrantee, and thats it. The car still looks great, doesnt burn a drop of oil, is pretty easy to work on, fun to drive, is loaded with features uncommon in its price class, Gets 28/31 MPG, plenty of power and offers exceptional comfort for me @ 61", 215lbs and my family.

  • Great car for the money - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I purchased this car used to replace a 94 Passat GLX. Great performance, styling, and many helpful features head the list of improvements, including keyless entry, side curtain air bags and a great stereo. Mileage is in the 21 MPG range. Just replaced the water pump at 60k, otherwise the car has been flawless!

  • love that car! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

This is my dream car...from the time first came out Ive always wanted one. And let me tell you...there have been NO dissapointments at all. The car offers a smooth quiet ride, it hugs the street and the turbo allows you to feel a little power despite the economical 4 cylinder engine. I love the look of the car and the comfort. It seems like youre driving a more expensive car than you actually are. Reliability has been good, except for a couple of minor quirks in the beginning. 5 stars!!!
