This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Three weeks of ownership, Three Times Being Serviced - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

The air conditionint in my new Passat went out after 400 miles and the emergency brake got stuck at 1,000 miles. The dealer needs to replace the switch ( 2 weeks waiting time). Also, my car has rattles in the dashboard and as of today, drivers door as well. It has loud wind noise. I guess they dont make them like they used to. This is the last VW I will ever buy.

  • Disappointing - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I bought this car for quality. But have not received anything but aggravation. What a big lie that Germans build quality. Since I bought this car I been taking it to the dealer for electrical problems. Too many to list. And forget about vw to help, all they tell me "Im sorry to hear that you having trouble."

  • Run for the hills - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Ive owned this car from new and from week one, yes week one, its been in the shop. After having this car for almost three years now, I cant remember a time when I wasnt making plans in my schedule to take it in. Heres a short list: 3 nav units, satellite replacement, CD changer, airbag sensor, battery, window controller, almost all of the "soft touch" pieces on the interior, ashtray lid, catalytic downpipe assembly, front suspension parts, brake parts, rear trunk springs, fuel sending unit, 2 speakers and Im sure I forgot a few! This car is worthless! Its value has decreased so fast my head spins, and its no surprise if you read the reviews. Im trading it ASAP. Ill never buy VW again!

  • Second Passat 4Motion - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Was sold on the 4Motion after taking a 2004 Passat 4Motion through 20 miles of twisting and turning snow covered roads in Northern Michigan. The 06 with the larger 3.6L V6 has a lot more punch than the 04s 2.8L engine. The six-speed transmission provides surprisingly good gas mileage, bumping up to 30 mpg at better-than-posted highway speeds.

  • Problems - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

My 2006 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T has been in the dealership for a total of 14 work days to fix problems with it. The check engine light went on and I cant lock the doors or the alarm will go off. The interior lights go on while driving and the doors unlock and lock while driving. The stereo volume goes up and down (told I have to live with that according to my dealer). They still cant figure out what is causing the problems.

  • people are so cheap - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This car is great mine is at 160 k miles the inside of my buttons and locks buttons did peel and bubble but its only a 50$ fix... People complain about the up keep costing so much but ITS A VOLKSWAGEN! It is not an american car repairs cost more the engine is not regular its all new technology if you cant afford up keep you shouldnt buy a foreign car. Its like buying a name brand purse to look rich but not having any cash in it. [non-permissible content removed]

  • Passat 3.6 Sport is the Best FWD Car on the Planet - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I bought a Passat 3.6 with Sport Package 1. The Recaro seats in the sport model are superior to anything I have tested or ridden in, including my dads Mercedes-Bernz S420. The leather is baseball glove quality, incredible. The 3.6L engine has great power and torque max is at 2,750 rpm (better than the Infiniti G35). This car has a solid Mercedes-like feel that is absent in the Acura TL, Toyota Camry, etc. The manufacturer incentives (for leftover 06 models) dropped the price so low that NOTHING else competes: It costs $4,000 - $5,000 less than the TL or a comparably equipped Infiniti G35 (though no interior option is actually as nice in either). The sport pkg. also has stiffer springs and shocks and sits 15mm lower, I love it. The steering feel is light but accurate, but I would prefer more effort.

  • If only it were reliable - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

When I bought this car I totally loved it. I drives great and was fun to drive. I never noticed until I went to sell it and got the vehicle service history printed out that I took it in 14 times for non-standard maintenence in 4.5 years. This is ridiculous. As soon as the warranty ran out, then I had to start paying for repairs out of pocket. Sooo disappointing. I would have loved to have kept this car, but the unreliability is so huge. Ive previously owned another VW before this that had some problems. I will never buy another VW. Again, the reliability is terrible. I think VW should pay me back for the 3 visits to dealer in one month alone that cost nealy $3500.

  • Suspension problem caus. prem. tyre wear - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Very pleased with the overall performance but rumbling noise on certain road surfaces is most disconcerting and appears to cause premature tyre wear. The dealer and his staff knew of the problem when I first approached them but VW will not acknowledge the problem as one which demands some beneficial attention for the customer. They say it is a .characteristic of the vehicle and are not prepared to fix it or offer compensation for the excessive tyre wear. I would love to hear from any other owners who have experienced the problem.

  • I Wanted To Like This Car - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I bought this car in 2008 with 17,000 miles on it. Now it has 40,000 on it and its been in the shop 3 times. The first time it went in the exhaust pipe ripped right out of the turbo and it sounded like a diesel truck. The next morning after I got it back I put my A/C on and it didnt work,so back to the dealer I went. They had to replace the whole compressor and flush the system. Two months after that it started to make a growling noise when I hit the throttle hard to pass, guess what I took it back and they said it was the cam shaft. I got it back last week and tonight I went to pick my daughter up from day care put the key in and tried to start it up and the engine is locked up.(JUNK)
