This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • My first VW - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

After suffering through poor gas mileage and equally poor reliability and service I finally decided to hang up the "it must be American" and purchase a foreign made vehicle. I was in the marked for a European sedan and after thinking my mind was made up on the BMW 3-Series I am thankful that I wandered into my local VW dealership and test drove the Passat. This vehicle is not only fun to drive but performs just as well in my opnion as the BMW. The best part about it was I got so much more for my money as far as "extras" that drove up the price of the BMW but were considered standards on the VW. Between the gas mileage, style, comfort and dependability I couldnt be happier.

After researching numerous cars including the Saab 9-5, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Volvo S40 and Lincoln Zephyr I found that the for the money, standard features, resale potential, style, safety features, and performance the VW 2.0T Passat was the best deal out there. It is a great looking car that seems to even get better looking every day. It has the power of a six cellandar and the automatic transmission is smooth as silk. While I wanted the Dynaudio system and the wood trim I didn’t want to spend all the extra money on various packages to get it and have settled for an aftermarket real wood dash kit and have found the stock stereo to be more than adequate.

  • Good transportation if it runs OK! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I have owned this car for a while. It is an above average car to drive when it runs. All four doors have been repaired (windows, locks). All four brakes have been repaired/replaced, twice on rear. Brake light/cruise not working, etc. Too many problems to list.

I reviewed quite a few cars in this segment, including the Acura TL, Honda Accord, Nissans, and Toyotas. For the price and the amount of features I was sold on this.

My Passat has been a major disappointment. Ive had all types of problems: electrical/engine warning lights, stereo volume, door locking, a/c, when driving and sunroof is open it makes a horrible sound, air quality, brake inefficiency, fuel cap, the list goes on. Ironically, my car is an 06, I have a 39 mo lease and only have 24,000 miles on it. From a comparison standpoint, my 2003 Pathfinder has 50k miles, and I have only had to change the tires & brake pads. To top it off, you cant buy wipers anywhere!

  • incredibly disappointing on reliability - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

When I first got the car, I loved it. Great sport suspension ride. Responsive. But then the problems started to happen withing a month of owning the car. Thus far, tire bearing replaced, camshaft replaced, fuel injector replaced, transmission value, spark plug replaced from carbon build up (always used premium fuel with cleaning addictives!), software reflashed multiple times, radio update for sound being muffled, oil burning and I can go on and on. This is on top of the multiple recall work. Where is the quality control?!!! Have yet another appointment to address more oil burning and car jerking from downshifting. Spent more time in service for this VW than all other cards I owned in past!

  • Expensive Junk - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

My wife bought a new Passat in late December 2006. The night we drove it home the right headlight failed and it took the dealership nearly two weeks to find and install another unit. The car ran fine until mid-May 2007 when it started to make a loud buzzing noise on start-up. We immediately took it into the dealer who advised that a bolt had sheared on the oil pump and it needed an entire new engine! As of June 14, 2007 the dealership has had the car for almost 4 weeks and is now installing the third engine because the replacement engine had the same problem. This car has been out of service for more than 5 weeks during the first 6 months of ownership. This is absolutely ridiculous quality.

  • Been in shop 3x in 2 mos. no accident - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I purchased this car used at 35K and its been in the shop 3x in the last 2.5 months with engine issues, key fob issues, fuse went, and suspension issues. The car has never been in a prior accident and never one with me since I purchased it. Ill never get another VW. Plan to trade this car in by end of year if these problems keep occurring, as I suspect they will.

  • No Problems After 2 1/2 Years - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This has been the best care that Ive owned. Looks great, excellent performance, quality interior, excellent stereo, plenty of room both inside and in the trunk. Havent had a single problem with this vehicle and its a pleasure to drive. Some times the problems reported are the result of the driver/lack of maintenance, or someone who has purchased a flooded car.
