This Year's Model Updates:

The big news for 2004 is the addition of a 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder engine to the lineup late in the model year. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is a delayed option on 1.8T-equipped GLS models. Also note that the 2.8-liter V6 is no longer available on GLS models. The premium Monsoon stereo and Homelink are now standard on all GLS models, while wood trim has been added to the optional Leather Package. The ESP stability control system is now standard on the GLX. Rounding out the changes are restyled 15- and 16-inch wheels and new side mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Expensive upper-level models, less rear-seat room than some competitors, some confusing interior controls.

  • Excellent Driving Experience - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

The 2004 Passat TDI is a well built, fun car to drive with excellent torque for a diesel and power to spare on both highway and urban driving.

  • Excellent Car - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

This is my favorite car in over 30 years of driving. It has all the benefits of a wagon, yet drives like a sporty sedan. It has great mid speed acceleration, downshift to 4th or 3rd, floor it and you can, pass almost anything. It looks great, very European and the interior is very high class for a car in that price range. The gas mileage is so-so in city driving, but cruising at 75mph you can go 400 miles before gasing. I have had for 42,000 miles and have only brought it in for scheduled maintenance. Its reliable, sporty, looks great and practical, what more could you want.

  • I highly recommend buying a Passatt! - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

The Passatt is a beautiful car. The ride is powerful and solid (for lack of a better word). The sightlines are great. I was surprised how much leg room there is in both the front and rear. The sunroof is a nice extra (standard on the GLS).

  • Keeping this one! - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

I have had my Passat for almost two years and I have virtually NO complaints. This is my second Passat, I had my first one for about a year and then I realized that I shouldnt have passed up the heated leather seats and 4-Motion. I love both features - my passengers expecially love the heated passenger seat! The car perfoms extremly well in the snow. I feel very safe, comfortable and confident driving it on roads that have 6 - 8 inches of snow and have never been plowed! The car just does not slide! In my opinion there is not another car on the road that looks as sharp as the PASSAT! The car rides beautifully, handles great, and gets good gas millage. The 4-cylinder engines pick up is impressive.

  • 2004 Passat is indeed a fun to drive - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

The GLS has great standard features as well as nice extras. I have not owned the vehicle for that long I may be jumping the gun a bit but this is the third week I have it and it is amazing. The roomyness of the car is a great plus and the air conditioning is great,Its HOT in Florida!! not to mention the sound system and sunroof. Shop around for better prices. The cars safety features are a huge plus for the family and as far as insurance is concerned. The feel of its drive is captivating because of the turbo 1.8 engine that is nothing to laugh at. IF you ever forget its power it will instantly remind you. The fact that the 1.8T is a ULEV is a plus.

  • Dont buy Volkswagen - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

I enjoy the Volkswagen performance and body styles and have purchased two vehicles. The first one was a 1995 Golf which cost me more in repairs than the original price of the car. After reading how VW had improved reliability, I was suckered into purchasing the 2004 Passatt. My car is very well maintained and I average 10,000 miles per year. I wont list all the problems Ive encountered since all the previous reviews have already listed them. My observation of VW is that they build cars to break down so that you buy replacement parts at inflated prices. My dealer quoted me $200 to replace 4 spark plugs. I purchased the plugs for $32 and spent 15 minutes to replace them. Dont buy VW!!!

  • W8 Passat Review - 2004 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I would only take the time to write a review if a car was exceptionally good or a piece of junk. Well, the Passat W8 is by far the best car I have ever owned. The 8 cylinder engine is silky smooth, as is the 5sp tranny - all wheel drive. I believe the interior build quality and materials is better than a new Lexus I bought for my wife (she picked it out!). I bought it because I refuse to drive a Statement Car. You know the car makes Im talking about. Admittedly, this was a relatively expensive car new, but it has been a wonderful car that I intend to keep for some time.

This car looks and drives like a million bucks. It does everything well, from cruising hundreds of miles at 90 mph to running errands around town. You get a fantastic sense of control and safety when driving it. Want to impress your friends? You got it. Want to take your friends downtown for dinner? You got it. Want to get to work QUICK? You got it. Want to cruise in style? You got it. Want to go slow to save some fuel? You got it. Want to fold down the seats and haul some serious cargo? You got it. Most importantly, its not an Acura or Honda so it really stands out in the crowd.
