This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Volkwagen Oil Consumption - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Our 2006 Passat has been a nightmare. We have had the car in the shop 15-16 times for the replacement of peeling switches, recall fixes, but most important oil consumption problems. I noticed after the first oil change the car was using 1-1.5 quarts of oil every 5k. I was told normal by Volkswagen dealer. It has gotten worse and a 5k oil consumption test showed 3 quarts per 5k. Most recently they are performing a 1000k test but no acknowledgment of a problem. I am done with Volkswagens once I get rid of this one. Recommend Honda, Toyota or Nissan to prospective buyers.

Nice engine and tiptronic, mirror wind noises, cup holders poorly designed, hood chips like hell, water leaks in trunk, huge blind spot, idiotic key design - difficult to remove it, cant put the wipers upright for winter storms, oil filter 12.95-for paper insert, small AC vents, NO WINDSHIELD DEFROST ABILITIES!!

  • 2.0t not bad, not great either - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Ive owned the car now for about 4 months. Its an ok driving car, I find there is a bit of a turbo lag. I have had the battery go dead after driving home from work one day, and the in dash CD player doesnt work, the screen reads "CDC Hardware Error" This is unbeleivable as I had a aftermarket CD player in my older car and never gave me any problems. I just find there is no WOW factor with this car. I am nervous after reading all the bad reviews about the fuel pump and other electrical issues. The steering wheel lock module was a recalled item by VW, so mine was fixed. Overall I think someday soon I will trade it and get something more age approprite for a 26 year old. Maybe a Mustang.

  • Stay away Sell Now and Stay away. Do not buy ever. - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I own a 2006 Passat 2.0 T with 62K. This is the worst car I ever owned in my 50 years. The positive about a car is cool exterior look. The interior is falling apart. The drawers are stuck, paint is peeling off, other plastic parts have broken hinges. The engine is losing oil. I have to do oil change every 2,500 miles to keep dipstick inside the range. The wheel bearngs were replaced for both rear wheels. Air conditioner compressor died and AC didnt work for 2 years. The compressor for this car is the most expensive, due to high demand. VW of America are useless. Many Technical service Bulletins were issued, admitting the design flaws, but not granting financial aid. Stay away.

  • Fun Family Car with Excellent Value - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Just signed the lease through VW Credit for 2.0T Auto with Package 2. Besides the Passat, my wife and I also tested Audi A4 2.0T, the new Jetta, Accord V6 and Camry V6. The A4 had more feature than the Passat, but the ride was too bumpy for our taste. When compared to the other three, the Passat is just better in almost every single aspect. It has more passing power, a more sporty ride that is not so bumpy, and perfectly weighted steering. Excellent interior design, feels very upscale. Good space for both front and rear occupants. The lease program is very attractive on this car!

2006 3.6L Passat loaded. Passenger side Xenon headlights gone out for the second time. Can you believe a $ 460.00 repair. Incredible! Bumper needs removal to replace bulb. This car has only 17K miles on it. Thank god it was under warranty but Im worried when the warranty ends. Other than this problem, love this car. Dealership has been great with any repairs since its under warranty.

  • This Car Will Save Your Life! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I purchased my immaculate and gently used 2006 Passat in February 07 (it had only 8K miles), and was able to enjoy it for about 4 months before it was tragically killed last week in an accident. I was t-boned on the drivers side by a car traveling about 35 mph. The 5 star crash test rating is well deserved! The side curtain and lumbar airbags all deployed as designed, and there was minimal intrusion into the cabin. My passenger and I were able to walk away unharmed. The outstanding engineering that made this possible cannot be underestimated! Sadly, "Pascal" could not be repaired, but I WILL buy another one just like it. If youre thinking safety, trust me, this car will save your life!

  • A very disappointed customer! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Ever since I bought this car, Ive had continual problems. I have owned it for 6 months and it has been in for service 8 times (6 times within the first 2 months) for intermittent problems with the electrical system, transmission, tire pressure malfunction and various other issues. In addition to all these technical problems, VW has not shown any concern nor did their corporate offices respond to a letter detailing all the issues I have had and continue to experience. This was my first VW and it will be my last. Be cautious!

  • Disappointed - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Terrible experience. First VW in my family and never again. Under warranty: the window motor in the passenger door breaks within a day after repair (5x "repaired"), the A/C went out after only a year and while I was finishing up the work week (in the summer, of course) and driving with the windows down/ sunroof open, the sunroof decided not to close. Lock/Unlock buttons peeling. Window shade lights (next to mirror) went out within months. Right after the warranty ran out, the entire control board and steering column went out (car wouldnt start): over $1000. Cruise control broke. And now the engine has blown: $7500 plus tax/fees to repair. Too expensive to repair!!

  • Fantastic - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Its time to hear from one of the many, many happy VW owners. This is my 4th new VW since 1983. All of my VWs have been very reliable and my Passat has been the MOST reliable so far. Thats why I keep buying VWs! My nearest Volkswagen service department is 120 miles from where I live. Ive only take the car in for its scheduled maintenance. The VR6 is very powerful and helps to make this car a blast to drive. The Dynaudio sound system is the very best Ive heard in any vehicle. This car is proof once again that the finest automobiles in the world are engineered just an on-ramp away from the Autobahn. Im selling this one to my brother who owns a 1998 Passat which has also been very reliable
