This Year's Model Updates:

For 2003, a base GL sedan and wagon are available. Think of the GL as a GLS 1.8T for buyers who don't require any extras like alloy wheels, leather upholstery, seat heaters or a sunroof. Meanwhile, alloy wheels and sunroof are now standard on GLS models. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system will not be offered on GLS V6 models, forcing interested buyers to cross the 30-grand line; however, VW has made stability control (ESP) optional on all Passats (except the W8, which has this standard). Also this year, you'll be able to get W8 sedans and wagons with a six-speed manual transmission and a sport package that includes a firmer suspension and the requisite 17-inch wheels. Lastly, the standard stereo head unit gets backlighting for the buttons.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.

I believe that the Passat is the best 4 door family sedan for the money (compared to Honda (didnt care for the 03 Accord redesign), Toyota, and Acura (TL Type-S didnt do it for me)- it DOESNT compare to domestic products). A quality German-engineered and built car, many features for the money (interior design and fit and finish alone make this a wonderful car), safety (side curtain air bags, etc.), and good looks to boot. May be a few $K more than Japanese cars, but once you drive one, youll understand why. I came out of a BMW and wanted to stay with German quality, reliability, etc. and feel that this is a good compromise.

This is a smoooth car. There is power any time in any gear, and the gas mileage isnt bad. Its design will not go out of style. Ill happily drive this car for years to come.

Bought it last fall after months looking for a gently-used 2001.5 or 2002, but couldnt find a V6 anywhere. Traffic around DC can be frustrating, but I stopped complaining about my commute after buying it. And if I ever think I spent too much, all I have to do is drive something else to realize that every last penny was worth it. This car looks great and is a blast to drive! It handles wonderfully (I cried for my old Saab every day that I drove the very vanilla Dodge that replaced it, until I bought the Passat), is great on short AND long drives (nearly 24,000 trouble-free miles), and handles anything from sand to snow with aplomb.

I have owned three VW jetta and a Chevy Blazer and I can say the amount of times I took all three VW to the shop was less than the number of times I took the Chevy to the shop. Thank goodness I am driving one of the best cars of our time. I dont care what anybody says. I love my new passat and my wife is going to get rid of her mitsubishi and get one too!!!. It just puts a smile on my face anytime i sit behind the wheel. I recommend anyone who wants to purchase a sedan for $21000 plus to consider a passat!!!

Bought a 2003 with sports package and 10k miles on for only $28,000 recently. While the regular price might be on the high side, you can get great discounts right now on new ones. If you havent driven one before, go try it out. I use to have the V6 GLX Passat, and the W8 is way sportier and faster and more refined. Only gripe is the gas mileage which is bad if you have a lead foot like me.

I really cant say enough good things about this car. I got the manual transmission and Im glad I did. The torque is a bit weak until about 2200 rpms, so its nice to have that freedom. Its comfortable all around and very nice on the highway. Its a good city car and Im averaging about 30 mpg. (85% highway). On long highway trips, I have exceeded 34 mpg.

A super nice auto! Well made, fun to drive, comfortable, safe and affordable. Volkswagon is killing the competition! A 15 year BMWer who is equally happy with a bunch of cash to spare. Very Well done.

  • A quattro-style car for far less - 2003 Volkswagen Passat

I had an audi 5000 CSTQ for ten years before I explored the VW 4-motion passat. It was immediately apparant that VW was more service-oriented and that the car is an amazing value for what you pay. The passat has all the best features of the audi quattro - including the same AWD system and comparable handling. The only appreciable differences between the passat and the A6 quattro is the level of interior cabin luxury. The wood detailing of the audi is a classy feature which the high-end passat could use. In terms of ride, though, the passat 4-motion captures the best of the audi quattro series.

I was searching all the informations about the Jetta and Passat last year when I was almost going to buy the Jetta. I saw many complains on the Jetta, part of the reasons because are made in Mexico. However, I bought the Passat, so far I am really happy and didnt regreat at all. Thats good sight!!
