This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Very Impressed - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

My wife and I went to the VW dealer looking for the 2006 Passat 2.0T. We ended up test driving the 3.6L and all I could say was "WOW!" We spent that week after, researching the 2006 Passat online, comparing to other cars in its class, the price, etc. We ended up selling our existing car, (1999 Nissan Altma) and got a ride from the in-laws to the dealer, with my research folder and checkbook in hand. The Passat we wanted just arrived on the lot, 3.6L, black on black with Lux #2, Dynaudio and DVD navigation. We checked out the car and my wife and I agreed to only buy the car if we could get it at invoice price. And we did!

This car is unbelievable. We just love it. The retail price is a steal. You have to drive it, look at it, and feel it to appreciate it. Also, check out the interior blue & red lighting. It is very sexy. The turbo engine is very quick. When you put your foot on the gas, you feel like your your going to fly. Be careful, its fast. The seats are so comfortable, my back never felt better. The fit and finish is flawless. What a beautifull riding car. Thank you Volkswagen.

After owning a 2006 BMW 330i with the sport package, I can say that my Passat 3.6 with Sport pkg.1 is just as nice a ride if not more so. With 280 hp and 265 ft. lb. of torque this car really gets up and goes. It is smooth, has great handling for a rather large sedan, and the sport seats are extremely comfy with great lateral support. I also got the 18" alloys with the all season Pirelli tires for an extra $400. The car is great in the rain and like past VWs that Ive owned, Im sure it will be great in the snow. Surely cant say that for that RWD BMW I skated with a few times. Overall, the ride is stiff with the sport suspension but its nice when you hit the twisties. Overall, this is a sweet ride for the price.

  • Suspension problem caus. prem. tyre wear - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Very pleased with the overall performance but rumbling noise on certain road surfaces is most disconcerting and appears to cause premature tyre wear. The dealer and his staff knew of the problem when I first approached them but VW will not acknowledge the problem as one which demands some beneficial attention for the customer. They say it is a .characteristic of the vehicle and are not prepared to fix it or offer compensation for the excessive tyre wear. I would love to hear from any other owners who have experienced the problem.

  • Always something to repair, nothing BIG....yet! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This car has always had some minor problems, nothing major, but most annoying. However, now that I have 50k miles, more seems to be malfunctioning. A few weeks ago the engine light came on which turned out to be a malfunctioning turbo charger recirculating valve, total cost $303.59. Now the entire headliner is falling down. The dealer said the glue failed. They estimated the replacement to be $800! Ill look elsewhere, thank you. Bottom Line: This was my first and last Volkswagen. Needless to say, I would not recommend this car to anyone.

  • I Wanted To Like This Car - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I bought this car in 2008 with 17,000 miles on it. Now it has 40,000 on it and its been in the shop 3 times. The first time it went in the exhaust pipe ripped right out of the turbo and it sounded like a diesel truck. The next morning after I got it back I put my A/C on and it didnt work,so back to the dealer I went. They had to replace the whole compressor and flush the system. Two months after that it started to make a growling noise when I hit the throttle hard to pass, guess what I took it back and they said it was the cam shaft. I got it back last week and tonight I went to pick my daughter up from day care put the key in and tried to start it up and the engine is locked up.(JUNK)

  • Just the engine and tranny - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

We purchased 2 value edition demos each with 5k on ODO, wifes coil gave up after 1000 miles of usage otherwise perfect, mine is perfect, 34.5 per gallon on hwy at 60 MPH, 26.7 average. Here are a few dislikes: idiotic ignition key which is difficult to remove, cannot set wipers upright for winter storms, poorly designed cup holders, blinker stays on when the ignition is not engaged, fuel cap error light, mirror noise, small inefficient AC vents, roof grooves drip water after rain during exiting, all doors do not unlock when exiting, winter windshield defrost way too weak.

  • Never Again - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Best to stay away from this one. I was a devout VW fan until this car. Had a 2004 VW Jetta that was great. This thing has electronic ghosts such as the emergency brake coming on and off, the gas light comes on with ample gas in the tank, the check engine light....its been in the shop numerous times, all they do is reset the codes if any and the problems continue. It also has a problem starting occasionally after filling it up with gas. For the price, VW should do better. I was going to set my sights on a Eos next but, I refuse to buy another VW. I find regular maintenance is way overpriced as well. I follow the manual to a tee and also use synthetic oil and premium gas all the time.

  • is this a VW - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

The Passat should not be compared with some ot the cars it is being compared to. It is truly a European sedan. The design, performance, and fun factor are all evident. I cant believe the power that comes from the 2.0T engine. VW has hit the bulls eye with this one.

  • TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, WASTE OF METAL - NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCE - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Bought a CPO 06 20k mile VW passat that is a piece of crap & literally had everything replaced within 6 months - a few of them within 3 DAYS of purchasing the car. From entire AC system to radio to ignition module to steering column, instrument cluster to heater, gas tank dropped & replaced, fuel injectors I believe, coil packs, fuel lines, radiator leaking, water pump, driver door handle because it stopped working & had to crawl in passenger side!! Driver door striker as well on a different occasion, almost all suspension parts, rear struts, the list goes on and on.... Those are just off the top of my head but almost every moving engine part, suspension, & electrical item was replaced, yet
