This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

  • 5 years passed. Still Love it. - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

1999 VW Passat. Love it. Love it. Love it. After 5 years/70K still looks like a new. Since B5 was designed its body style become classic and has been cloned by other auto makers. Havent had ANY serious problems with it. One year ago replaced original battery and tires. Soon will have to replace breaks. Other than that - just regular maintenance were the only major expense. Its a pity some other people here had bad luck with their Passat.

  • Bad Bad Bad Car - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I bought it with 90.000 miles on it. Paid $3000,00 and in less than 2 months I had spend $3,600 in parts. The car doesnt go one week without breaking is weird ! is bad If I could go back in time I would never buy it ! after that I had to spend more money because the car is always breaking down. You never know when you will be able to wake up and go to work because you never know if your car will start! CRAZY! MY ADVICE DONT BUY IT!

  • Quality Issues Galore! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

My 99 Passat needed new brakes at 35,000 miles, the driver turn light assembly fell off (while driving 70 mph on the freeway)at 34,000 miles, the passenger side boot failed at 30,000 miles and was replaced by VW under warranty, at 36,000 mi. the driver side boot has failed and VW says is not part of the drive train, therefore not covered under the 100,000 miles warranty! We have owned cars for 20 years with fewer repairs!!

  • 1999 Passat GLS V-6 - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Mine was built on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon. 2 failed fuel sending units, leaking rear shock, cam seal blew, power steering leak (twice) CV boot cracked, rear hatch lock repaired, squeek in drivers door, broken bottom engine cover. Bought new and its not driven hard and only put on 12K per year. Im jealous of all the other positive reviews. Cant say the same for mine.

  • Great car...but - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

We bought our Passat new in 99. We liked the cornering, handling and feel of the car. It was fun to drive and continued to be so until we traded it several weeks ago. We were experiencing too many failures of electrical and electronic componants. It got so we wondered every time we drove the car, what would go wrong next. This seems to be a common problem with VWs and in fact all German cars at present. Take a look at the April issue of Consumers Report and you will see what I mean. Volkswagon must address reliability of their cars if they want to hold on to their American market.

  • I Love the Car, but... - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I love my wifes Passat, but when anything goes wrong its an absolute nightmare. Weve had three or four problems with the car requiring dealer service, and every time theres been a two week wait in order to get the car looked at. Right now it wont start, and the dealer said "Well, theres other cars in front of you so itll be at least a week." That is absolutely unacceptable. When the starter went out on my Ford I was back on the road the next day. Not only do you have to pay out your rear end for VW service, you have to go out of your way to do it. Its enough to keep me from ever buying another VW.

I have been very happy with this car. I drive a lot since I am in sales. I get good HWY mileage 28 to 30 MPG. Very good looking car. Leather seats holding up well. Outside of timing belt replacement, I have only had one other major repair expense in 2 years I have owned Passat. Keep good tires on it.

  • Not all that Bad - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Reading all the reviews on the car Im a little surprised. But I noticed most of them come from the wagon or v6 model. Then again Ive had this car for only 6 months. It performs fine. I do have a problem with the abs module. But my brakes work fine for now. Its a German import. The parts are known to be expensive. That is a given and known fact that most people know, its no secret. The car is smooth and has plenty power for a 4 cyl. Good hwy mpg. The seats are a little hot. And engine displaces a lot of heat. But that doesnt make it a bad car. The high octane thing is annoying. Octane booster still helps even with 91 octane.
