This Year's Model Updates:

For 2003, a base GL sedan and wagon are available. Think of the GL as a GLS 1.8T for buyers who don't require any extras like alloy wheels, leather upholstery, seat heaters or a sunroof. Meanwhile, alloy wheels and sunroof are now standard on GLS models. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system will not be offered on GLS V6 models, forcing interested buyers to cross the 30-grand line; however, VW has made stability control (ESP) optional on all Passats (except the W8, which has this standard). Also this year, you'll be able to get W8 sedans and wagons with a six-speed manual transmission and a sport package that includes a firmer suspension and the requisite 17-inch wheels. Lastly, the standard stereo head unit gets backlighting for the buttons.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.

I like this car. It is comfortable, reasonably powerful, gets decent mileage even with AWD and feels solid. I had a couple warranty problems - one with brake pads, the other with a temperature sensor. Both were fixed by the dealer without charge.

I have owned my 2003 1.8T Tip-Tronic for 2 years and have taken it to the shop for oil changes only. Yes thats correct no coils needed and therefore it has been a stellar car. It will average 25 to 27 MPG in town and I have often gotten up around 35 MPG on the open road at 10 over 65. I have tested other cars and quite frankly find that the zip from the turbo and the comfort of the quality leather interior make this a great buy. Its lines are clean and the fit & finish are as good as I have seen. The ride is a bit mushy but the standard 15" tires are a lot of the culprit and could easily be changed out for something better. The car is very stable in the NE snow country with stock tires.

I turned in my 99 GLS V6 Sedan for the 4Motion Wagon and have not looked back. While winter snows on the sedan made it vertually 4x4, the past few winters in NJ have been especially harsh, I cant wait for this winter. On dry roads it feels like its tearing up the blacktop. Weve had a lot of rain lately and the grip continues. Also own a 95 GLX Wagon, 5 spd, while it too is a blast to drive, the luxury in the 03 4Motion out does it. No complaints, just Fahrvergneugen!

the car is one great package. has allthe necessary bells and whistles. great handling and extremely responsive engine. gets you out of tight spots with a simple touch of the gas peddal. the 4 motion is truly the best. Great in corners and engine even on auto slows down and shifts down according to speed and rpm. this is the total package. yo get 100 cents for every Dollar.

After driving a BMW 325 for 12 years, I bought a new car, and decided to try the VW Passat GLX manual. I havent been disappointed. The fit and finish are excellent, the overall operation is fantastic, and the price was right. All of the comfort controls, Climatronic, heated seats work very well, Monsoon stereo system is excellent.

Our third Passat (first automatic) ... and each one keeps getting better (oh yes, we still have the first, a 95 GLX VR6 and near 110,000 miles) but this one is IMPROVED with state-of-the-art interior, updated warranty and tiptronic transmission. An automatic that preforms like the 5-speed. Driving the car is fun! Only negative is the small trunk space which dosent accommodate too many pieces of luggage, and the reduced fuel economy.
