This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Awesome Car! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

The interior styling is awesome. The red spot lights over the center console is a feature that I have not seen in any other car. The electronic parking brake is cool (sounds like a space ship landing when you activate it). The handling is not as good as the previous models. The seats dont wrap around you as well either.

Ive enjoyed driving the car but not quite as much as the 2004 Passat 6-cyl. The two things that really need change on my new Passat are the console cup holders (they are useless) and the key should have a ring so when you valet the car and you take the valet key there is something they can hang the key on. I had a valet misplace the key but it was found.

So far, Ive run into a few issues...some cosmetic, some mechanical. Some of the pwr lock/window buttons were blistering, and the leather on a rear door panel began bubbling. All was covered under manufacturer warranty. The dealership that the vehicle was purchased through misinformed me of the expiration date of the manufacturer warranty and this was during some expensive repairs. If you own a 2006+ Passat, check your spare tire compartment! I found 6 inches of standing water in the compartment! Supposedly this is fairly common. Although the dealer would never admit it. WHEN the cars runs, its great! Now, I will only buy a new VW for the warranty and service maintenance. NO MORE CPL HASSLE

  • Love this Passat! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This is a great car and it should be at this price. Optioned out, its not cheap, but its a car with great performance, even with the 4-cyl engine, which is what I have. Its fuel economy is good, the car is roomy, it has great built quality and awesome looks. I wish the steering wheel was power adjustable or easier to get to the adjustment handle. The navigation system is pretty easy to use, even without the owners manual. The sound system is great, and I love how easy it is to use the sunroof with the rotary knob. Its rear and side visibility could be a tad better, but it has great front visibility. I love the turn signals in the side view mirrors and the heated mirrors and heated washer fluid nozzles.

  • STAY AWAY! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I bought my 2006 Passat 2.0T loaded w/ everything but Navigation as a Certified PreOwned. Long story short. In the first 3 months of ownership car brokedown once and needed to be towed (electrical brake stuck and couldnt drive), transmission issues, buttons pealing, rear door wouldnt close shut, Tire Monitoring System Failure, and the list goes on. Car was down 27 days in first 3 months and VW put $5200 into it...thank God for the CPO warranty! Not to mention this car stickered for over $30K and now they want to give me $12K for trade in...what happened to VW resale. This Passat when working is much funner than Camry or Accord, and looks better IMO but just not worth the HEADACHE!

We still enjoy the driving experience. With over 15,000 miles, the only maintenance has been three oil changes. The ride is smooth and reasonably quiet. Stability and traction control keep the car where the driver wants it to be. Its average gas mileage is OK at ~26 mpg. The interior is very comfortable (we are small drivers at 56" tall) over long periods (drives from Ohio to Florida and Maine) of time on the road. The turbo engine is powerful enough for us with lots of acceleration from the turbo boost. Overall, this car is a a good value at $27,000 with all the technology, safety and performance equipment included. We would buy this car again.

Thats the best way I can explain the handling and ride. I just leased the Passat 2.0Twith pkg. #1, cold weather pkg. and 17" rims for $390 a mo. for 36 mo. sign and drive. Ive had a Honda Accord EX-V6 before and I thought that was an excellent car, but this VW is really what driving is about. The 17s really make the difference. Good luck to all with the vehicle!

  • Lemon of the year reward - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I loved this car - talk about an exciting ride! Hit the gas and it flies. However, in the 2 1/2 years that we owned it, it spent 58 days in the shop - that averages out to 1 day for every 500 miles, some stuff minor, others major. Two visits were 3 weeks long because they would fix one thing and another would go bad. 4 rearends, a catalitic converter, multiple relays - parking brake, heated seats, radio etc., We actually traded this off while it was in the shop for another long visit. 500 - 200 miles between visits. Oh and the brake calipers were bad, this happened on its last visit - not really impressed.

  • Smokey the Passat - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

My wife and I test drove the vehicle and made our deal on this used Passat. The Carfax looked clean and required maintenance was accounted for. We signed a drove home. We then took our daughters for a ride and returned the vehicle to the drive. Fifteen minutes later we started the car. Smoke poured from the hood. The car died. Towed to the dealer and fixed. Not an auspicious start. We had it less than 1 hour. At any rate, it was repaired and runs fine. Coil burned out. Other than that debacle I like the vehicle. For now it has to prove itself to be reliable. After that flame out in the driveway that might be hard for this buggy to do. She does fly though with the Turbo!
