This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Great Ride and Engineering at a Great Price - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This is the car that have most enjoyed driving overall. Its best features are its powerful engine, stability, quality of interior design, and roomy space. Before I decided to get this car I drove an Altima, Maxima, and and Accord, but at the end my decision to get the Passat was made by the excellent drive feeling.

Purchase used. Looks and drives new. Put 600 miles on in 4 weeks. Not a squeak or rattle to be heard. Bought for safety, mpg, fun to drive (right on). Feels glued to the road at high speeds. First VW so far totally love it. Previous owner seemed to have dealt with 3 recalls, 2 computer updates. If I had to deal with that probably wouldnt be so happy. Others cars considered: BMW 3-Series, Infiniti G35, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4. For the money outstanding Euro car, cant be beat. Great that VW fit a full size spare in the trunk! Love the key fob! When the car is pushed hard in corners, notice body roll. I would buy another VW.

I am a happy 2006 VW Passat owner and I have just one problem. I forgot to tighten the fuel cap so the dashboard light came on. I reset it at the dealership and everything is OK. I feel that the suspention of the car is a bit soft for such sporty performance.

Performance is exceptional and fuel economy is great. Fun to drive. Very comfortable seating for average height drivers. Only complaint is front cup holders, hard to fit two drinks at same time.

  • A Brilliantly Executed Driving Machine! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I cannot begin to express how fantastic this car is in every regard. The Volkswagen Passat 3.6 is awesome to drive around town, through twisty turns and muscling down the highway. Its power delivery is smooth and voracious, the sport tuned suspension is nicely balanced and the car is laden with technology. From the sleek and refined muscular styling to the balanced performance, interior comfort and features of the car, this is probably one of the most well rounded and capable vehicles on the road today. The body of the new Passat is also incredibly rigid which really enhances the feeling of control when driving the car. Take a look at this car. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Bought Over a BMW 330i and Volvo S60 - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

The 2006 Volkswagen Passat 3.6 is an absolute joy to drive. My wife and I both like it better than her Volvo S60 T5. The combination of its 276hp, dynaudio stereo system, leather interior with wood trim made it feel like a better purchase than the BMW 330i. The engine seems incredibly responsive, and typically is at about 2,500 rpm at 75+ mph. This car is a world apart from the 03 and 04 Passats Ive ridden in.

This car has been bullet-proof after almost 60,00 miles, which, I have to admit, is quite a bit different from my previous Passat (1996 GLX). But I bought another one, didnt I? Replaced the wiper motor early on, under warranty. After that, nothing. My only complaint is that the ride has softened. My 96 was a slot car. But, its still a beautiful design 4 years later and is the best blend of performance and fuel economy I know of in the segment.

  • This Car Rocks - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Having owned a 2002 4Motion I decided to try the newly designed Passat when my lease expired. Also in the equation was the new Toyota Avalon and the Lincoln Zephyr. The Avalon is beautifully done but a bit too floaty and isolated for me. The Lincoln is nice but my preconceived notions about Lincoln as being stodgy got in the way. It is a nice car...but oh that new 3.6L Passat! The interior is the best Ive seen, BMW look out. The seats are comfotable and the handling is precise. The new electomechanical steering is a blast to feel since it is stiff at speed but the wheel turns easily at low speed. The mettallic black finish and ten spoke alloy wheels make it stand out in any crowd.

  • Awesome - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

As an avid VW enthusiast, I decided to upgrade my much-loved Beetle to a roomier more powerful car. Im a VW girl, but I still looked at the Chrysler 300C, Honda Accord, BMW 330, Mercedes-Benz, etc and after test driving the Passat, Im still a VW girl. The car is so smooth and powerful. I love listening to music, so the Dynaudio with XM radio is otherwordly. It is the best sound system that Ive ever had. If you are in the market for a mid-size sedan, you simply must take the Passat for a test drive, you will not be disappointed. The other reviewers are right on the money. I added aftermarket rims and tint; people dont even know what it is. this car is awesome. What a Christmas present to myself!

  • Second Passat 4Motion - 2006 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Was sold on the 4Motion after taking a 2004 Passat 4Motion through 20 miles of twisting and turning snow covered roads in Northern Michigan. The 06 with the larger 3.6L V6 has a lot more punch than the 04s 2.8L engine. The six-speed transmission provides surprisingly good gas mileage, bumping up to 30 mpg at better-than-posted highway speeds.
