Overview & Reviews
After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.
- Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
- Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

Nothing but problems - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By claret - December 23 - 10:00 amI have very little that is good to say about this vehicle, or Volkswagen in general. I have had several unresolved problems with this car and the dealership where I bought it. In addition, if you ever have a problem with Volkswagen dont bother calling their headquarters. You will get rude, inattentive service with zero resolution to your problem. Problems: Thermostat, spark plugs, "false" computer chip errors, etc.

Why buy anything else? - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By Steve Arrivo - December 10 - 2:00 amThis is a superb car. I currently have an A4 1.8TQ as well and this is just as good. The car is solid as a rock, get huge gas mileage (35-38 highway) and fits everything we could ever want to bring on a trip with 4 people (2 kids). Get a roof rack and carry the bikes, no problem. Only gripe - seats are too big and soft - must be for big butts.... Oh yeah, it has killer resale as well. Check the cost of ownership and be pleasantly surprised.

You get what you pay for - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By VWRattletrap - November 18 - 10:00 amThis is my 3rd Volkswagen and yes, Id get another one. I havent had the ignition/electrical problems others have had, but my car has had its share. The list: 2 radios, engine computer, cruise control, rear passenger electric window motor, falling trim. Think of it this way: the same size car with the same features from BMW or Mercedes will cost $15-20K more . . . youve got to expect something to give. VW has put its money into the drivetrain and suspension, certainly not the interior build quality. The secret to silencing the squeaks, rattles, and buzzes of any VW is to cram a penny or two between the plastic bits that are causing the noise.

Best Car I Have Ever Owned! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By dickiet - November 4 - 10:00 amAlmost four years old and I still love my Passat! I wish I could say the same about the dealer. I have had no mechanical difficulties with the car what so ever. The original tires left something to be desired, other than that totally happy. I am in the processes of purchasing a Passat wagon for the growing family. Will hang onto the sedan and trade in the Intrigue.

Love it - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By Chance - October 23 - 7:03 pmI bought this car not too long ago with only 70,000 miles on it, I got it from a dealership and I am not to certain about the owner/owners before me but since Ive had it Ive put about 7000 miles on it. I have been putting 93 octane in it and synthetic oil and it runs excellent. Just as you would expect a German engineered car to run. I always hear mixed reviews about VWs and it has led me to believe that when it comes to a VW the car gods either smile upon you or curse your every step. I am lucky enough to have found one that has such low mileage for its age and still runs superbly.

Solid value - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By rjm - October 17 - 10:00 amThis vehicle delivers the quality and performance of an Audi for the price of an Accord. I thought about buying a more current model but I just cant part with a vehicle that feels new and costs so little to keep running. The only feature I miss is power seats.

ready to get rid of the lemon ! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By alincke - October 6 - 10:00 amI bought my VW as a certified used vehicle with 28K.My fun with the car lasted 18 months. Multiple trips to a dealer due to check engine light. Recently with 56K the timing belt fell of while I was driving around town. I was 4K too many to have extensive repairs to the engine covered by limited warranty. To top it of the timing belt failure happened bearly 2 weeks after car was serviced at the dealership. Call s to dealership and VW left me very disappointed not only with the car but also customer service.

Keep it simple - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By kathonic - October 1 - 1:52 pmI purchased mine with 190,000 miles prominently interstate and highway mileage. The car is lumbering around town, but can really move when you need it to (Ive already avoided a few accidents because of it). Mechanically everything is easy to replace yourself, and often much cheaper as well, so if your considering the 5-speed V6 I would definitely invest in as much repair materials as you can. If youre good at basic repairs and replacement this car responds well to them. A word of warning however, do NOT skimp on seals and gaskets, make sure they are in good order before buying this car, because they have the most potential to do the greatest harm.

ryan 99 passat - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
By rmj - September 24 - 2:00 amI have had my VW for six months and have put over 16000 miles on it. Its very reliable and for a 1.8 litre 4 cyl. sedan it is a very fun car to drive. Even with the turbo it is far from a racecar but does feel like a 6 cyl. I would definitely recommend the car to several different types of people.
