After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

• Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.

• Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

  After 6 years, I still adore this car - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

  I love this car. The exterior style still looks as good as the day I got it. I have only ever had to have minor repairs done. It has to have the most comfortable and roomy interior -- for front and rear passengers -- as any car Ive experienced. Not to mention how fun to drive it is.

  I bought the car new and now have 66K mi on it. Overall, Im rather satisfied with it. Did not have problems others reported (or maybe not yet). Major out- of pocket expense was $400+ brake job (rotors needed to be replaced), which I think was a bit excessive. Minor out-of pocket expenses included: replacing power mirror knob ($120), which somehow got broken (cant figure out how), and a new engine temp sensor (similar amount). Changed O-ring during maint service. Before I bought the car, dealer had to fix a water leak. Rear window motor was replaced under warranty. Windshield was a stone magnet; replaced it twice. Must change original tires soon.

  Overall it is an awesome car to drive both for short commute to work or long drive to nowhere. Cool dashboard lighting is pleasant to the eyes during night driving.

  I will never, ever buy an VW vehicle again. I bough this car three years ago, and ever since, the car keeps breaking down every few weeks! Every electrical problem that could have happen, did happen. Every mechanical problem that could have happen, also did happen. The Volkswagen should be ashamed for selling such terrible vehicles. Read other reviews here before you decide to buy any VW.

  Love the car and have had very little issues. On the 40k service, the dealership came up with a couple of items to repair and ouch! The repairs were as high as on my previous BMW and Mercedes that I owned. Using the dealership for scheduled service and engine diagnostics, but Ill be heading to my mechanic for anything outside of that.

  Ive had this car for a couple of years now and it has 270,000 miles on it and have had no problems I mean I have had to replace some belts but this car is great! I love VWs and as long as you do regular maintenance on them they keep going. This car is proof. It has been up and down the east coast with no hesitation! Its comfortable, roomy , and drives great. It still can get up and go if you need it to! I would recommend this car to anyone!

  Moved up to the Passat from a Saturn SC2 when I decided I needed a little more "grown up" car. Really have enjoyed driving it but this car saved my butt, I believe, thanks to the 4MOTION. Was knocked across a highway median by a van and managed to stay under control until I came to a stop. After reveiwing the accident scene, the CHP officer offered me a job! He couldnt believe how well Id stuck to the road. I probably wont keep this one when my lease is up but Im sure to get another.

  Going on 10 years with this car and I love it as much as the day in 1997 I knew Id own one. Ive always seen VWs as cars that require more than average maintenance, so im not surprised at having to have work done. The car drives great, looks great, and (knock on wood) will be with me for many more years.

  Mixed Feelings - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

  I have very mixed feelings about this car. I love the interior and exterior styling as well as the ride quality and handling. I hate the build quality. I have had problems with leaking oil, squeaky brakes (which VW tells me is "normal"), ignition system, undercarriage...Also, the dealership and VW customer service is terrible.

  Most Low-Maintenance Car Ive Ever Owned - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

  I bought the 1999 Passat Wagon used in 2001 or so, with 24K miles on it. It had been an executive car at VW in Dearborn. It must have been charmed, because it was the lowest-maintenance car Ive ever owned. I hardly had to spend a dime on that thing except for oil changes and some regular, reasonable maintenance. This was before VW decided to make everything so difficult to repair on all their cars, so the dealers could make a fortune off of consumers with silly repairs. I was able to do simple things like headlamp replacements myself. In 2004 I stupidly traded it for a new one at 0% financing and now Im stuck with a lemon. Dont buy an 04 Passat Wagon!
