This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

  • The Passat Strikes Again - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Okay, so I was handed over my sisters Passat because the truck that my parents had gotten me was taken away. The Passat sits very low to the ground, making the oil pan also very low to the ground. I wouldnt suggest flying over any speed bumps. It destroyed my oil pan which after numerous attempts was never fixed until about the fifth attempt (it cost $800 to replace). The build makes me feel like its cheap. It has small broken accessories in the car. All around its an okay car to get you point A to B most of the time.

  • Unreliable & Expensive to Repair - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Driving this car overall has been a pleasure however the maintenance and repair costs have been outrageous. In 4 years my out of pocket expenses for repairs has been about $7,000. Extensive warranty repairs have been made in addition to out of pocket expenses, including replacement of emission controls, engine electronics, and the oil pump. It would be difficult for me to considering buying another VW after this experience.

  • Well.... 2 months later back on lot - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I bought this car with 100,000 miles on it and from day one it was a fun car. The car was fun to drive when it worked... First to go was a valve cover and pep boys only sold one that cost me 47 dollars to do and I had to do it. Then I got another 10 miles on the car and oil and antifreeze was pouring out of the car from the oil cooler gasket cost me 350 dollars to fix. Now remember I only drove this car 10 miles before this happened. This car was built well inside parts hold up however mechanically you need to know what your doing or your in trouble. I read reviews and didnt listen I should have these cars are trouble please take my advice and buy something else

  • Yeah, well, ok. . . - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

We bought the volkswagen passat as our first family car, and it just didnt meet our needs like we thought it would. When we purchased the passat it seemed roomy and exceptionally quiet, The roominess quickly wore off but it still remains one of the least noisy cars (behind the wheel) weve been exposed to. I didnt like the fact that this car was the first I had to take to the dealership to change out the headlight; Its very complicated under the hood. It was alright, but didnt thrill us at any point.

  • German Engineered Passat GLX - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

My last car was a very nice Acura TL but I like my Certified Pre Owned VW Passat GLX much better. At high speeds it holds the road better, reacts less to cross winds, puddles and rough road surfaces. It feels hunkered down, stable and capable of much higher speed. The seating is better bolstered, firm and much more comfortable for long trips. The 8 speaker sound system came alive when I added a VW 6-disc changer. The trunk is huge and I like being able to drop the rear seats (60/40) to accomodate cargo. The 5-Speed tiptronic is a blast to use. Love the heated seats, moonroof, rain sensing wipers, memory seats and trip information computer. Engineered for the Autobahn.

  • certain problems, but fine ride - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Repeat problems: links/arms in suspension lose "permanently sealed" lubricant, causing a disturbing grinding & squeeking noise. VW does not accept responsibility to replace these prematurely worn parts. Occasional problems starting car; may be corroded wiring on underside or faulty ignition switch. Problems known to VW but little inclination to help consumer fix problem. When all said, I love the firm ride and handling of my wagon.

  • Wonderful car, electronic problems - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Car purchased new, 4 yrs. old, 58K miles. Love the design, roominess and build quality. Ride/handling are comfortable, sophisticated. Accel is OK, turbo kicks in late, power up hills is sluggish and needs Tiptronic assist. Transmission doesnt shift back up quickly enough after sustained lower-gear driving. Gas econ is GREAT (34 mpg @ 72 mph-hwy!). Overall avg mpg: 26. Problems have been electronic: failed engine temp sensor, trunk light switch, dash lights. SHOCKING failure (at 4 yrs): electronic firing regulator shorted out; diagnosis + part ($348.) + labor = $600! What else electronic may fail next?? VW techs say: water pumps go out at around 60K.

  • Love It! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I got this car with 130,000 kms. last year. I took it in for service today with 206,000 with its first problem (a faulty hazard light switch). During that time it got me from Alberta to Boston, and all over Canada at 130km/hr+ with no issues/maintenance other than oil changes. It runs smoothly, ALWAYS starts (even in -30C), and goes like a bat out of H. My previous car was a 94 VR6. That one lasted 400,000 miles and Im thinking this one will too.

  • First and Last VW - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I was reading some of these other reviews and had to add mine. I bought my Passat new, granted it has 85K on it, but I have had more problems with this car in the past year or two. New stereo (twice), Door handle broke (twice), plus other little pieces have "fallen" off. Volkswagon does not stand behind their products at all and the maintenance is a small fortune if you go to the dealer. I have finally decided to go back to a car that is reliable for the long term. Honda, I am coming back!!!
