This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

  • Never another VW - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

This has been my worst vehicle I have owned, first Wagon sold in Oklahoma nothing but mechanical problems. Electronic sensors contnue to go out which are expensive to replace, 82000 had timing belt replaced plus other repairs, $1200.00 now all cylinders misfiring, another electronic sensor,$800.00 plus. The timing chain behind cam loose and chewed up plastic shield making shrill sound when running, cost to replace $1100 plus. If I had taken it back to dealer would be much more. If I can sell it after repaired for what it is costing me to repair it will be gone and replaced with an American made car. If you have more money than you need by a VW it will soon be gone.

We have had a lot of problems with our 99 Passat. The timing belt went at 80,000 miles, causing $4,000 in damage to the engine. This car is very expensive to maintain. I can only put in 93 gas in it due to turbo engine. I will not buy another Volkswagon again due to the high maintaince costs.

  • I ignored the reviews and bought one anyway, DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I read many mixed reviews about Passats before purchasing mine used. It is a 5 speed with 120,000 miles. That may seem high but 4 a stick it really aint to bad. The car is cute and fun to drive but its a POS! Ive had the car 2 months and have had nothing but problems. The power steering went out, had to replace the pump twice and now its making a winding noise as i turn. Cheap made parts are falling off left and right. Blinker light even fell off as i was driving on the interstate. windows are crap and work only when they want to. now it wont even start! Just makes a wierd ticking noise. Its a cute car, but im going back to my busted and rusted chevy cus thats never quit on me!!! [violative content deleted]!!

  • Will Never buy it again - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I am so glad I got raid it this car. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PASST, this is by far the worst car I ever had, in 1 year and 2months of ownership I had to take it in many times, to the dealer and a private mechanic. Problems includes: one recall, on electrical problem (left me on the road), steering, AC, Battery, cup holder, brakes, and windows. Everything is stupidly expensive and it is very hard to find. After that I had more problems with the windows both sides and had to had it repair twice, also started to have some problems with the power steering before I sold. It is very had to re-sell this vehicle.

  • Terrible vehicle - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I will never, ever buy an VW vehicle again. I bough this car three years ago, and ever since, the car keeps breaking down every few weeks! Every electrical problem that could have happen, did happen. Every mechanical problem that could have happen, also did happen. The Volkswagen should be ashamed for selling such terrible vehicles. Read other reviews here before you decide to buy any VW.

  • dont buy one new or used - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

My first lemon. Trim peeled off the back and front door. In 8 months never fixed by dealer. 2 power window openers failed. Must pound on dash to get lights for heat to work. Wont start in the rain. Needs new computer at $500 which should be a recall. Cylinders constantly misfiring. Replaced most of electric system, the wires, coils, etc. Keys to doors break. Bushings in front end degrade. Dealers arrogant expensive and incompetent. Heat sheild is rattling. All of this in the first 50,000 miles. I am selling mine for $9000. Im going to buy a five year old Camry and take the loss.

  • Nothing but problems - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I have very little that is good to say about this vehicle, or Volkswagen in general. I have had several unresolved problems with this car and the dealership where I bought it. In addition, if you ever have a problem with Volkswagen dont bother calling their headquarters. You will get rude, inattentive service with zero resolution to your problem. Problems: Thermostat, spark plugs, "false" computer chip errors, etc.

  • Expensive to own - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I bought this car for 4,500 and i have only owned it for 8 months and i have spent over 1,700 just repairing it. Check engine light comes on, it sputters after i fill it up, and not the ABS control module has gone out. I like this car but i hate how it always breaks down...

The worst car I have ever owned, and Ive owned at least 6 different makes of cars. Reliability extremely poor, with "check engine" light frequently going on, car stalling, water from rain sloshing through the car by my feet, radio volume fading in and out. Dealerships are also questionable, as I took it to 3 different dealers within 2 months to get the same problem serviced. Diagnoses ranged from "nothing wrong" to complete engine overhaul. Ironically I bought this car because I needed a reliable family car for my growing family--this turned out to be the worst family car in the world.
