This Year's Model Updates:

For 2000, the big news is the availability of the 150-horsepower 1.8T engine on the Golf GLS. In addition, the Golf receives several equipment updates, including child-seat anchor points, sun visor extenders, a glare-reducing shade band on the windshield, a brake wear indicator light in the instrument cluster, a theft-repelling engine immobilizer and a tether for the fuel cap. All Golfs are now eligible for dealer-installed in-dash CD player; a dealer-installed CD changer is also available. Finally, GLS buyers can opt for a premium Monsoon sound system in lieu of the standard eight-speaker system.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available 1.8T engine, hatchback utility, lots of standard features, high-quality interior materials, 10-year/100,000 powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard.

  • Adios VW - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

I bought the Golf because my wife had an 89 Jetta that was built like a tank. The problems didnt start until just before the warranty expired. At 22,000 miles we had to have the engine computer and various sensors replaced. Oil just "disappears" and mileage is about 20mpg. Brakes and water pump went at 40,000, alternator ($600) at 42,000. The plastic parts and glue have been getting worse and worse all summer. I walked out one morning to find the passenger side trim just hanging (thank god for crazy glue). Were taking a loss and trading it in for a Toyota Matrix. Dont know if Ill trust the Germans ever again...

This car runs like a top. Its affordable, fun to drive and has earned my trust. The cup holders are cheap and flimsy, but I can live with that. The features-to-cost ratio is much better than anything in its class. I LOVE THIS CAR!

I leased a GLS 4-dr Golf and I love it! I drove a Corolla before and now I cant go back to the vanilla style and handling of the Hondas and Toyotas. The only problem Ive had is with a faulty oxygen sensor computer. I was expecting this as it seemed to be a flaw on 2000 and early 2001 Golfs and Jettas Otherwise it drive well and I have no complaints. Dealer service in both Wisconsin and Wash DC area has beeen exceptional. No one ever pesters me for extra oil changes, etc. I will probably buy a VW when the lease is up.

My 2000 Volkswagen Golf has had too many problems to list. Its factory recalls include: a bad welding on upper front control arm, dealership will replace if needed; no labeling of child safety seat teathers; hazard / turn signal relay gone bad, had mine replaced; fuel line relay, crack in seal could cause leak that could start fire, mine needed replacing. This is what I have also had to replace due to problems: turbo boost controller/blow off valve, transmission, clutch, head & tail lightbulb, front undercariage cover, front brakes, passenger seat, battery, interior seals, cruise control module, and rear cup holders. I paid $1,500 for a carmax warranty, and it was worth every penny. Their 250 point inspection is worthless. My cars a lemon that I cant get rid of.

  • Love/Hate Relationship - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

This is my 4rth VW. The new Golf is by far superior. But with VW you are either lucky or poor. More often than not, the latter. While I love many things about the Golf, this will be my last VW. In 1st year - 5spd needed to be completely replaced due to a mftr defect in the 5th gear. Had to battle VW 6 mths with dangerous tranny (wouldnt go into 1st+5th gears -I had to start in 2nd!). Many other problems during the 60000 miles so far. Fun to drive but at what price. Love car but hate reliability. I had it shipped directly from Germany hoping it would prove more reliable than my previous VWs. Some who have been luckier than I, but more who swear they will never buy VWs again.

Ive had my vw turbodiesel 2000 golf for year and a half... 26,000 miles. I bought this car for the mileage, and it has been great... I get about 550 miles to the tankful with highway driving. Keep an eye out for diesel stations when youre running low! Good brakes, solid shifter.

This car was my first brand new car. Here is my grand list of bad behavior by my little golf; rear break pads and rotors replaced at 20k, radio replaced due to sticky buttons, mid console replacement due to damage during radio installation, rear break pads replaced again after another 15k miles! At 40k miles, water pump and timing belt went! Covered under warranty, but they also had to replace oxygen sensor and mass air flow sensor. Bottom line, the car is neat, but reliability sucks, VW service dept. sucks, and customer care folks suck too. So, I hope that my experience will help deter future suckers from buying a German engineering nightmare.

  • Huge Value - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

This car is an excellent value for the money. Rear disc brakes, ABS, side airbags, all standard. Theater lighting and features found in cars twice the price. Extremely solid little car. Engine durable and competent, and handling very reassuring at speed, though could be stiffened for my taste. No problems after 38,000 miles. Excellent car!
