This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota releases the Tundra pickup-based Sequoia, a full-size SUV that represents the first serious challenge to the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Ford Expedition and GMC Yukon from across either ocean.

Pros:
  • Creamy V8 engine meets ULEV standards, spews 40 percent fewer NMOG pollutants than Expedition, rugged good looks, optional stability control system, curtain-shield side airbags, massive ground clearance, third row of seats.

  • One year with the Sequoia - 2001 Toyota Sequoia

If you are considering a full sized SUV, the Sequoia must be a serious contender. It features gobs of room, numerous safety features, plenty of luxo goodies yet is relatively fun and easy to drive for such a big vehicle. While a tad pricey compared to the competition, I think in the long run it will be cheaper when repairs and depreciation are considered. I paid $38,700 for mine with everything but sunroof and 4wd. I could have bought the same Expedition or Durango for almost $10,000 less but I know Id have problems down the road. Bottom line? Peace of mind is worth money to me.

  • I love my Sequoia, but...... - 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Its been a great car. Probably should have gotten the leather seats for a little more comfort. We live on a hill so we have to replace the brakes about every 10,000 miles. Also, the rubber paint around ALL my windows is peeling off. I brought it to the dealer but they said I was out of warranty. I was a little shocked at that. It wasnt a cheap car. So now my wonderful car has peeling paint around ALL the windows, exposing chrome. But overall, its been a wonderful car. Id take it anywhere assuredly. Other than that, the functionality has been really great. Dependable. Wished it looked as great as I feel about it.

  • Overall, we love our Sequoia! - 2001 Toyota Sequoia

In 2 years of ownership, we have had no major problems. It carries our family of 5 plus a ton of luggage w/o breaking a sweat. We love the huge moonroof, the 6 CD in-dash changer, the power of the 4.7 L V-8. We have taken it down dusty desert trails to visit ghost towns and up mountain paths w/o so much as a hiccup. There are a few gripes, however - the tail gate refused to open not long after we bought it and we could hear broken parts rattling around inside. The transmission sometimes clunks when were at a stoplight and it feels like weve been bumped from behind. Both rear passenger doors refuse to stay open on even the slightest incline, and the rear cubby hatch cover pops open.

  • Will I Buy Another Toyota? - 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Rattles worse than 10 year old Explorer. Fold up seats take foot off cargo capacity. JBL radio does not work. Speakers fade in and out - now only one speaker working. Supposedly a TSB on this. Repeated trips to the dealer "I cant make any money on this" service managers quote! Interior fit and finish are average - side of leather seat already has a wear-hole. Car hesitates on acceleration after sharp turn, etc., etc. Very dissapointed in quality AND service. Toyota should be ashamed and should fire the service manager. After all of this the dealer charges me $40 for rental car. Toyota? Never again!!!!

  • Best buy - 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Overall very comfortable. Inspite of its size, handles well even at high speeds and in hilly areas. Not too difficult to parallel park. Gives 17-19mpg on Highway. about 15 in city of boise Had to replace tires at 20,000 and front brakes are already gone with just over 21000 miles.

  • Love it but ready to move on! - 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Weve loved the room and comfort of the Sequoia but we are spending a fortune on gas! It has been a very reliable vehicle for us but weve had a few problems. Air conditioning in 2nd row stopped working, VSC went out, front brake rotors warped, back latch broke. Spending 2K/year on maintenance.

if you must have a full size suv, sequoia is the way to go. fact: american cars suffer dearly from poor quality. if you think otherwise, youre a fool who has not done your homework. sequoia brings together this higher end quality with most of the desireable features in fullsize suvs. is it a little pricey for the LMTD? yes, but you get put a little more at ease knowing its a toyota. if you must have an suv and can afford $40K, the sequoia would be my 1st pick again in a heartbeat.

The Y.A.W. rate sensor went out on my family and I while on a road trip. Very dangerous. This is a recall item. This really put a dent in opinion of Toyota. Fuel economy 12.3 avg. this vehicle will break you if you use it as a daily driver and need to drive more than 100mile per day. The 2wd model is basically a big gas guzzling car with out any capability off the smooth paved road. I got mine cheap at $10,200 and 96k miles and only one owner so I guess I am going to keep it for awhile since it is such a big car and we all can pile in, but as soon as I can I am going to look for an FJ cruiser and not look back at the sequoia.

  • Good SUV But Needs Improvement - 2001 Toyota Sequoia

I purchased a first model year Sequoia new. The vehicle handles great in snow. The high road clearance and 4 wheel drive will get you through any weather condition except icing conditions. The front and second row seats are comfortable for adults. The third row seats are only suitable for kids. I dont think that the reliability is up to what you should expect from Toyota or a vehicle costing just under 50K. The brake computers went and it took three weeks for Toyota to figure out how to repair it. My 4-wheel drive just died. The throttle computer broke. I have had to spend about $3,500 a year for the last two years in repairs. Interior creature comforts are lacking
