This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota has given the RAV4 a midcycle freshening for 2004. Notable improvements include a larger 161-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine, a mild restyling that gives it a more aggressive appearance, and inside, a new steering wheel and instrument panel. Standard equipment has increased significantly, with stability and traction control, antilock brakes, air conditioning and a six-speaker stereo heading up the list. Multistage front airbags are also new this year, and side airbags for front occupants and full-length head curtain airbags are now optional.

Pros:
  • Steers and handles like a car, thoughtful cabin design, exemplary build and materials quality, refined engine.
Cons:
  • Somewhat cramped interior, high repair costs in low-speed rear collisions.

Ive wanted a Rav4 since 1996, but no dealer could locate a 5-speed with anti- lock brakes. I finally went with an automatic with all the safety features that became available this year: side/head airbags, traction, and stability control. No one can believe me when I tell them I traded my Audi TT roadster for a Rav4. I dont regret it one bit--well, maybe on those few days of great weather when I could throw the top back and let the breezes take me away. At least I can get more than one suitcase in the Rav!

This was my first car purchase ever. I knew I wanted an SUV, but not a giant gas guzzler. I love that I can for the most part fit into most parking spaces. It does drive like a car. This car now has 130,000 miles and still going strong. I wish Toyota made them convertibles at that time bc then this would be my car forever. Ive always wanted a convertible SUV, which there is one available now, that I am considering getting. But I am so attached to my Rav. Good thing my brother is going to buy it from me, bc it definitely deserves a good home. It actually has good sound too. I sure am going to miss my Rav if I do end up selling it. Im fighting back tears as I write this review...sniff sniff.

If youre looking for an SUV thats not a gas guzzler, a monster truck, and is just awesome to drive, this is it! I got one for my 15th b-day (yes, i know im lucky), and i have never been happier in my life! Its been one year, and i cant drive her enough! I highly reccomend this for anyone and everyone! 10!

Wanted small SUV and test drove most of them. None compared to the RAV4 - it handles like a car but drives like a SUV without the noise and it is awesome in heavy snow. The 2004 model is well designed and looks different to all those other "standard" SUV styles. At that price and with all the features, why would anyone want to spend $10 to $20 thousand more just to have a big monster. Get the L package and you have it all.

Overall, the rav4 is priced nicely for what it delivers. Although the engine is not powerful, I took it off-road and it handled well and was very impressed.
