Model Overview:

The Toyota Matrix was essentially a tall yet compact wagon, with a dash of cool, sporty style thrown in. It was typically marketed toward younger shoppers, though buyers of all ages were drawn to this car's many desirable attributes. Based on the Corolla sedan of its time, the Matrix was exceptionally versatile and well suited for hauling bulky cargo or transporting adult-sized passengers.

The main downside to the Matrix was that, apart from the relatively rare XRS variant, it was never particularly rewarding to drive. But for the practical-minded, this will likely be of little concern. Toyota sold two generations of the Matrix, and both boasted high fuel economy, a smooth ride, a roomy cabin, available all-wheel drive and reliable Toyota genes. Overall we think the Matrix is one of the best choices available for a used small wagon or hatchback.

Used Toyota Matrix Models

The second generation of the Toyota Matrix was produced from 2009-'13. Initial trim levels consisted of base, midlevel S and sporty, top-dog XRS.

The base model was powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission was standard and a four-speed automatic was optional -- both driving the front wheels. Upgrading to the Matrix S or XRS got you a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The S also offered an all-wheel-drive option. With this engine and front-wheel drive, one could choose between a five-speed manual or an optional five-speed automatic, while the AWD version only came with a four-speed automatic.

Standard feature highlights for the base L trim initially included air-conditioning, a 60/40-split/folding rear seat, a fold-flat front passenger seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. Besides the more powerful engine, the Matrix S gained a rear wiper, full power accessories, cruise control, keyless entry and a premium audio system. The AWD version of the S gained foglights and an independent rear suspension. The Matrix XRS featured 18-inch alloy wheels, a roof spoiler, sport-tuned suspension and steering, upgraded seat fabric and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Key options, depending on trim level, included a sunroof, a JBL sound system, satellite radio and a navigation system. More standard features, such as full power accessories and cruise control for the base trim, were fitted as the years progressed.

Inside, the Matrix had enough space to carry items up to 8 feet long, and the cargo area's durable plastic load floor allowed one to transport a variety of items, from home improvement materials to bicycles to a kayak. It was also pretty comfortable for both front and rear passengers. The very easy-to-use controls were another positive.

On the road, the base Toyota Matrix was a bit pokey in terms of acceleration, though its engine did provide pretty good fuel economy. The extra torque from the 2.4-liter engine made the driving experience more relaxed, particularly in regards to passing. Driven around corners, the Matrix was balanced and predictable, and overall ride quality was very comfortable. Still, the second-generation Matrix was not a very exciting car to pilot, largely due to its numb-feeling steering.

Changes throughout the Matrix's second generation were usually minor, consisting of added standard features and shuffling of  trim levels. Stability control became standard for 2010 but the XRS and its sport-tuned suspension were discontinued for 2011. For 2012, Toyota renamed the base version the L.

The first-generation Toyota Matrix was introduced for the 2003 model year and ran until 2008. Toyota offered it in base, XR and XRS trim levels. The lower two trims came with a 130-hp, 1.8-liter engine and either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The XRS came with a high-winding 180-hp 1.8-liter engine and an exclusive six-speed manual transmission. In 2006, the XRS' final year, the engine was re-rated to 164 hp due to new testing procedures, but actual performance was unchanged.

In editorial reviews, we noted that the 1.8-liter equipped Matrix offered adequate acceleration in most circumstances, but its dearth of low-end torque was apparent on uphill grades. Manual-equipped Matrix wagons tended to offer more pep than those equipped with automatic transmissions. Handling was somewhat less than engaging; still, commuters and road trippers will likely appreciate the wagon's smooth, comfortable ride.

Inside, this Matrix charmed with its solid quality and versatility. Fit and finish was above average, and the cargo area and backside of the rear seats were finished with an easy-to-clean plastic as well as specialized cargo tracks.

If you're interested in a used first-generation Toyota Matrix, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, early Matrix models were missing a couple of important safety features: side airbags and stability control. These features were added (as options) in model-year 2005. Also note that stability control was offered only on models equipped with an automatic transmission. You also might encounter all-wheel-drive versions of the Matrix or Matrix XR; they produced slightly less power and came with the automatic only. All-wheel drive was discontinued for the 2007 model year.

  • Scared to drive this car but it looks good. - 2010 Toyota Matrix

I feel like I paid way too much for the 2010 Matix S which has basic insides- no bells or whisles- blah. The car sounds like its dragging, the tires already are worn before 15,000 miles and hear the problem doesnt go away. Blind spots, drivers head rest is a blind spot and and eye sore and its not comfortable. I use it for work and back. I dont want to take it on long trips for its uncomfortable. Telescope steering wheel means 1/2 in closer to the engine, thats already in your lap.

  • Decent car - 2009 Toyota Matrix

As a previous Matrix owner I had certain expectations for the new model. My previous was a 2005 XR, my new model is the larger motor S with a 5 speed auto. The new model has much better pickup and feels more confident on the road. The downside to this is the fuel economy is lackluster. My best mileage when all highway miles was just at 30 mpg. My old matrix I averaged 30 overall with a lot of city driving, and had more than a few 36 mpg tanks. So far after only 5800 miles Ive averaged 23 mpg with this car. For comparison, my old V6 Oldsmobile Alero got better mileage. Im very disappointed in the fuel economy of the larger engine, I keep my tires inflated properly and drive conservatively.

  • Its fun - and cheep - 2006 Toyota Matrix

Was looking at new Lexus ES 330s and decided their cost was more than I really could afford. Started looking at lesser cost mini SUVs. Had really never paid attention to Toyota other than the Lexus. The Matrix caught our eye and we grabbed it for the inherent quality we knew Toyota has. If youre looking for high Resale, overall Quality, Sporty good looks, very Economical, good Comfort and a deceptively Roomy little rig,, look at the Toyota Matrix as your next car. We very much like ours because it fills our and most peoples needs.

  • Get one RIGHT NOW! - 2004 Toyota Matrix

I love my car! We got a great deal on it, too. Its so much fun to drive, and I love the fact that its got a Corolla engine (dependable!). Yay Ive been averaging gas mileage, and even though weve had it since Thanksgiving, the car has only been filled up 4 times! It averages about 32 MPG, and I do lots of city driving. I imagine the gas mileage would improve even more if I babied it on the road. Ive been seeing more of them on the road. Gotta be that sporty style paired with the incredible sticker price!

  • Safe in a crash - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

Ive driven my Matrix for a few years now. I love the interior. Its very comfortable and the dash looks attractive. Recently I went on vacation with a friend of mine and she drove us in my car. There were some deer in the road which caused us to swerve and crash head on into a tree. This car saved our lives. It was totaled but we are alive and came out relatively well. A few broken bones and bruises later...But honestly for a smaller car it took the hit well. I would recommend it highly. I wish I still had it.

  • Did they make this car just for me? - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

When I started looking into this car, I thought Toyota had gone and designed a car just for me! I mean, I needed a sub $20000 vehicle with at least 4 doors, with a sporty feel and great reliability. Took one look at this car and knew it was the one. Didnt want a stick so, the XRS was out of the picture and the XR had all the options and specs that I wanted. I drove it first in a base model with 16" steel rims and let me tell you how much a huge difference the 17x7.0" aluminums make. The car has great handling, a little heavy, but still really great. Happy I bought it and looking forward to many good years life from this Toyota.

  • Toyota Matrix: Only the beginning! - 2004 Toyota Matrix

I love my (V)atrix. I was gonna get the XRS but i dindnt like the front add ons. So i got a black stock matrix. Talk about a roomy car. This car is also great if you are into modifying your car. I lowered my 2004 matrix and it looks like a cross between a corola and a honda hatchback, but better looking.

  • Love my Matrix - 2004 Toyota Matrix
    By -

Im very happy with my Matrix XRS AWD. Ive had it about six and a half months now and have 21,700 miles on it (that is NOT a typo). Its very comfortable and a fun car to drive. Performance wise it lacks in sudden power and stabile turning at speed, but then its not meant to be a performance vehicle. For what it is meant to be, the performance is fine. Its also a very solid vehicle. No rattles, shakes, or vibrations.

  • Matrix Rules! - 2004 Toyota Matrix

Only had the car one week and I love it. Only complaint I have is body panels are thin, but that is true of any car these days. Two dents already

  • My little yellow Matrix--I love it! - 2004 Toyota Matrix
    By -

Although small the car is very roomy. My two teenage sons have plenty of room in the back seat. The wagon is a good size especially when the back seats are down. Gas mileage is great and inexpensive to fill up. It is comfortable and convenient to drive will all controls within reach of the driver. I really like the exterior design and the yellow color is a real eyecatcher. Reliability--its a Toyota-- nuf said!
