  • Think I purchased a Lemon! - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

Since owning my Matrix Ive put over 1k into fixing it! The calliphers went out, my floor is full of water from the sunroof, the gas mileage is appx 24 mpg, my headlights are cracked, this car is nice looking but poorly built (its a corolla I learned) Ive had no luck with this lemon and wish I never sold my CRV!! My interior is also fading (the silver knobs, etc), For a certified car, my old cheaper cars were much better. I will never buy another Toyota. Im having so many problems with this car I will have to sell it back and pay the diffrence, I dont know what else to do. Lesson learned- "never buy a first year car".

  • Lots of good; some bad - 2003 Toyota Matrix

The Matrix is a good car if you need headroom - Im 66", and it fits me perfectly with room to spare. It is an economical, reliable, relatively capacious car. It gets great mileage (low to mid 30s) and has not had any mechanical problems after 32,000 miles. It has decent cargo and passenger room. I would prefer that there be more lateral space, but its a compact car, after all. The interior build quality is VERY poor - the dashboard rattles everywhere. The exterior paint is VERY easy to scratch. The stock tires (Continental) are rubbish.

  • Missed the target, Toyota. - 2003 Toyota Matrix

The Matrix and its sister car, the Pontiac Vibe, are based on the Corolla platform. Ill just summarize by saying that this car, in all trims but the XRS, is tragically underpowered, particularly with the automatic, which is the only transmission available with AWD versions. Its very Japanese. Noise, firm seats, terrible steering wheel angle, and abusive ride are the most noticeable detractions from what could have been a nice car. On the positive side, it fits lots of stuff inside, and sees tolerable fuel numbers. Keep in mind, folks, reliability is a part of quality of life. Consider comfort and usability when considering your next vehicle. Or maybe Im just getting old.

I would NEVER buy this car if I could do it again! I bought one of the first ones and it is a total LEMON and the dealership wont replace it. drawers and pannels fall off all the time, chrom has fallen off. The AC has broken 3 times and now the engine and transmission have a serious problem and the dealership wont fix it because it is 5,000 miles past the warrenty. I have taken good care of this car and done all the oil changes but it doesnt seem to matter. I expected more from toyota and I also expected a transmission and engine in ANY new car to last longer than 3 years!

What an absolutely superb vehicle! As far as the looks go, it looks much better in person than the photos. This is a real head-turner that has great lines and a sporty look. The interior is super cool. everything looks sporty and is in a convenient location. It has a lot of very cool features. The ride is excellent and smooth. I feel that it does have a very nice burst of power. This car is surprisingly roomy. Overall it is a real "Home Run" for Toyota. I highly recommend it to anyone

  • Its hard not to love this car - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I just put 1,000 miles on my new XRS and Ive enjoyed every mile of it. It took me a little time to learn how to really drive this car. You can shift at around 4,000 rpm and get a really smooth ride out of it. Or you can rev it up to its power band (6,000-8,000 rpm) and get a lot more speed out of it, But keeping it in the power band takes a little practice on the open road. looking at the car you would not think it handles nearly as well as it does. It has a low center of gravity which gives it great handling around turns at high speeds. Do try and See this car in person, pictures do not do it justice. Its truly a joy to drive and its practical.

I have mixed feelings about my Matrix ... its definately an attention getter(8/10 scale Lexus RX300), somewhat fun to drive, very practical and fuel efficient ... on the other hand its relationship with Pontiac Vibe is rather apparent ... Dash is very tasteful, but its a chore on the sunny day, cheap GM, seats are too soft and covered with something that would look appropriate on inside 1984 Celebrity, not XXI century Toyota.

Large cargo space, lots of standard features and it is fun to drive. Smooth ride and high gas milage for its size. It is just about everything you can ask for.

  • What a great car! - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I love this car! This is my first Toyota, and I am very happy. The Matrix is fun to drive, sporty, the gas mileage is great, and all my friends are envious. It handles extremely well on wet pavement and around curves. The instrumentation is easy to see and use, the stereo is great, and it has a surprising capacity. Go Toyota!!
