The Matrix is an all-new model from Toyota. It offers sporty looks, enhanced cargo-carrying abilities and useful features not commonly found in small cars.

  • Modest torque output from engines, numb steering.

  • Love my Matrix - 2003 Toyota Matrix

Having driven and owned many different vehicles, I have never encountered one that I enjoy as much as I enjoy my Matrix. It responds quickly, drives smoothly, gets great gas mileage, holds 4 people comfortably enough for a 3000 mile road trip and looks sporty and fun. Complaints: The air conditioner quit because of an internal air filter that neither I nor my mechanic knew existed. (Once it was discovered and changed the A\C began to work again.) My standard transmission stalls too easily when starting off in first gear. The body has been marred in several places by minor bumps.

I have camped in my car and hauled trees, bushes and a big dog. The seats fold flat making a nice level surface. I have gone cross country in the heat of summer, driven 120 miles round trip to work daily in the snows of Maine, driven the Maine to Boston Corridor in the black of night and at the height of snow storms and never had a whit of a problem with any feature of the car. My only wish would be that it was a little more quiet on some road surfaces. I average 34 MPG. I Love It! Lou

  • Great car for the money - 2003 Toyota Matrix

This is a great car for the money. Its a combination of an SUV/Sport Sedan vehicle. Interior is very sporty (XR MODEL) and very spacious given its size. Engine has a lot of pep, its kicken 180 horses and its only a 4 cylinder. Engine is very quiet as well. As for reliability, all I can say is that "its a Toyota.

  • Advice - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I am currently dealing with nightmare of the 2003 AWD Matrix. I do have a warranty. I am looking in to my rights under the lemon law. It seems to me that these cars are coming up with the same transmission problems and the transmission is different in the AWD then from other Matrixs that the trans is Faulty. And Toyota should be responsible. If anyone feels the same way or has any advice for me post on this forum ill be looking out. Thank you

Its been two years since I purchased my XRS and it still runs like the day I bought it, and seems to perform even better (though thats probably thanks to new Falken performance tires). No mechanical defects, only regular maintenance. Its fun around town and even better on a stretch of road where no ones watching. For me, the benefit of the power switchover at 6000 rpm is great because it keeps me from being too road rage-ish around town, but rocks on back roads and highway passing. Fantastic muffler sound at all revs if youre into that sort of thing. Same avg mpg as my boyfriends 1.8l 01 (125 hp) Corolla providing I dont rev the hell out of it at every stoplight.

I didnt even look at the Matrix when I was searching for a new car, But my Mom said lets just test drive it and see. Well that did it for me, My MATRIX is fun to drive and very stylish looking. It doesnt look like anything else on the road! If you ahve a chance at least test drive one.

I didnt know what I was getting into buying a used high performance car. The shift/clutch was so difficult I had to go back and get lessons from a mechanic (after 42 years of driving stick). Then I had to get new brakes and new tires (costing twice as much as for a standard Matrix), because the previous owner in Jersey had apparently driven fast and slammed on the brakes a lot. I am concerned that in the not-too-distant future Ill be forced to replace the clutch to the tune of $700. So even though its cute and fun to drive, Im seriously considering turning it in on a "regular" (not sporty) Matrix.
