This Year's Model Updates:

For 1998, the Toyota 4Runner gets rotary HVAC controls, a new four-spoke steering wheel and revised audio control head units.

Pros:
  • Great looks and ground-pounding performance make the 4Runner an ideal choice for people who love the great outdoors as well as those who just want to look like they do.
Cons:
  • Steep price and choppy highway ride temper our enthusiasm for this otherwise outstanding truck.

  • Love this thing! - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

By far and away, the absolute best vehicle I have ever owned. Well over 100K miles and the thing is still running like a top! All I have had to do is replace the battery. I just can get over how well made and reliable the 4Runner is. I will never own another vehicle. Now I see why the used ones are so hard to come by.

  • I now have 2- 4Runners - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned and I have owned all domestic makes + other imports. I now have 128,000 miles on this 98 4Runner and the only part I had to change was the water pump wich had a minor leak. I still have all the original parts on this truck, including the brakes and exaust. What a truck!! I still enjoy the ride and with this mileage, still no rattles. This is a quality vehicle that I strongly recomend. I just purchased a new 2003, , but we are keepin this 98 model in the family; both my wife and daughter love to drive it. They both feel safe in it and love the clear view of the road ahead.

  • Great, great vehicle - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

I bought my 4Runner w/ 54k miles on it and have out almost 50k more on it in 3 years. Excepting regular fluid changes and the like, Ive only had to have it repaired once: I had to replace the AC compressor 2 1/2 years after I bought it. Highly reliable, enjoyable to drive, and very useful when I remodelled my home. Gas mileage leaves something to be desired. Highly recommened unless you have a long commute.

  • Just cant get rid of it - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Bought it new and have loved owning it. I keep looking to replace it but I just cant. New versions are all plastic. I like steel bumpers. It meets all of my driving needs perfectly. Has manual tranny, sunroof, towing pkg. Repairs through the years include: Antenna mechanism twice. Drivers door mechanism. Clutch. Trailer light converter box. Breaks as needed. Price of gas hurts but its worth it. Id buy the exact thing again new if they were available.

  • My Toyota 4Runner SR5 2WD - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

I was pleasanly surprised with this 4Runner. Rides smooth, no interior or exterior rattles. Steering is great in town and on the freeway. I feel the 3.4 engine has more than enough power for my needs. The A/C is great and all passengers get the cold air. The fuel mileage could be better. I get 16 mpg in the summer months with the A/C always on. In cooler weather without the A/C on I get 19 mpg. This is all city driving. On the freeway 24 mpg is the norm. I do use an K&N air filter, and synthetic oil, and Toyota oil filters. And 87 octane fuel. Its great SUV. I plan to keep it many years.

  • Great True SUV - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Now that SUVs are getting more car- like , the 4Runner is going to need some major rebuilding to keep pace. BUT, of all the $30K + mid-sized SUVs, the 4Runner is hands-down the best buy, IMO. If you place a high value on reliability, this ones unbeatable...Just change the oil every 3-5k mi & itll go to 250k mi no problem.

  • Move Over Energizer Bunny - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

I bought this car in 2002 with 55K miles on it and paid 21K. The best investment I ever made! I bought this vehicle because I had a 1998 Tacoma and loved it. I dreaded that I gave it up at the end of the lease! The 4Runner is the best quality vehicle I have ever owned. Who owns a car for 7 years and hasnt grown tired of it?? This is one amazing vehicle and you can not beat the value. Sure it does not get great gas mileage, but it still gets better than most NEW SUVs. I average over 20 MPG and I live in Phoenix which has stops lights every mile not to mention terrible rush hour traffic! If you are considering one of these old guys, go for it! You wont regret it!

  • Good value - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

I leased this truck for 5 years and had a relatively positive experience. I had one major accident and the front of the truck was completely destroyed but I remained unharmed. The antilock brakes seemed a bit sensitive and would kick in under the most unexpected conditions. Aside from a couple of expensive brake jobs trying to correct the problem I only had to change the oil and go.

  • Love my 4Runner - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

This is a great SUV! I havent had it but 9 months, but I have no complaint whatsoever! It has great visiblility, lots of space, and I love the back heating. The ride is great, although if you dont like the bumpiness of a truck...I dont recommend riding it much on the highway. Overall this truck was well worth my money and I will drive it until it dies. Lots of people have great comments about it, and I havent heard one bad thing as far as performance and reliablity. I met a man the other day who put over 400K miles on his....and hasnt had one major repair. I am a college student, so I find it very useful in moving my belongings!

  • Great Used Vehicle Choice - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

Purchased this vehicle on eBay with 90K miles for $10850. In the 3 months that Ive owned my 4Runner Ive driven it almost 4K trouble-free miles. No rattles, no broken interior pieces, paint is awesome, and the vehicle runs flawlessly. Transmission shifts smoothly but is on a flexible hanger system which causes it to move around as evidenced by the gear levers moving;it also appears to build up tension on stops and then releases when you move forward...this is apparently normal for these cars. Ride is quiet and smooth; a very comfortable interior. Havent used 4WD yet. 16" wheels are really nice. The crazy aftermarket alarm may have to go. Fuel economy is B+/A- (17 overall/21.5 on highway).
