Overview & Reviews
Base models have been dropped, leaving Limited and SR5 trim levels equipped with a standard automatic transmission, Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), traction control and ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and BrakeAssist. All 4Runners have power door locks this year, as well as a prewired trailer hitch harness, a modified grille design and freshened taillights. New wheels for Limited and Sport debut, and a new premium 3-in-1 audio system with a CD changer is available. Revised sun visors with extensions and a HomeLink programmable transmitter come standard on Limited and can be ordered on SR5. Limited also gets a new color of wood trim, and standard front seat heaters. There's bad news for hard-core off-roaders -- the optional differential lock has been discontinued with the demise of the manual transmission. Three new colors replace two old ones on the color chart.
- Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power hatch glass.
- Hard to climb in and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

Solid truck - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By best ever - February 8 - 10:43 pmI brought it used at 73,000 about 5 yrs ago. I currently have 155,000, the only major problem Ive had was that the transmission had to rebuilt at 96,000, but it has been running sound ever since.

Worth every penny! - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By YotaMan - November 1 - 11:00 amI bought my 4Runner with 54K mi and after 3.5 years I now have 165K. It has never left me stranded. All Ive done to it is replace the plugs/wires, brakes, timing belt, water pump, shocks/struts, tires, and other routine maintenance. The only problem Ive had with it is this week the front U-joint went bad causing it to ride rough. It cost 100 bucks to fix. Engine sounds as good as ever and I plan on putting another 100K+ miles on it!! I knew I had a solid truck and it was confirmed when I backed into the side of my neighbors bumper. It peeled his fiberglass bumper off like a banana! Scratched my paint and put a little hole in my metal bumper... cant even tell. Now thats a truck!

A Real Pleasure - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By Morton - September 29 - 10:00 amThis is my third lease. In 7 years I have not lost a days work because of mechanical reasons. Reliability is a 10 in my book. Great over all vehicle.

1 BAD TOYOTA - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By Super Mario - August 18 - 10:00 amThis is my second 4 Runner and my 94 still runs like a champ. Im sold on these trucks. I got the 2001 with the Sports Package. If you buy one you have to get the Sport Edition Package. It looks like a special edition without the price tag. These trucks will run forever with TLC.

Solid Pick - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By blackjack21 - July 26 - 10:00 amBought it new in 11/2000. Has done the job admirably. No mechanical problems whatsoever and the hood scoop gives it a sporty look. Only disappointment is in pickup/engine power.

7 1/2 times around the planet so far - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By okie_bill - June 14 - 9:06 amI purchased my 2001 4Runner SR5 Sport eight years ago this month, a mere 195K miles ago. Every year I look at the new car ads and every year I say, "maybe in another 15K miles." This is the best built, strongest running car Ive ever owned. Like others, Ive had a couple of similar minor issues - a broken power antenna, a center console fuse that burns out and yes, the worthless rear window deflector, but thats it. Ive had to replace the original tires once, have had *one* tune-up and the brakes have never been touched. Amazing. Its driven the Alaskan Highway, survived 2 winters in N. Dakota and still manages an average of 18 mpg. Why would I ever trade it in?

No Surprises, Quality and Reliability - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By Fabio - April 15 - 12:46 pmMy wife drives it 90% of the times, and get this...no complains! Usually with most of anything else, its, too big, too small, not confortable enough, bla bla. The 4Runner is a hit. Sometimes I drive it on weekends, and find it quite enjoyable, good response, and confortable. At times, I use it to tow my quad or commercial mower with a good size trailer...plenty of torque for a V6. Have had it for about 4 yrs, and its just like when we got it, just a litte older. My wife did get in an accident about 6 month ago, some moron decided to come in the wrong lane to avoid my wife carring 3 children, 7 to 15. Snapped the rear axel in half, spun 180 deg, caused $7K of damage, everyone safe.

2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By GMan5380 - February 20 - 2:23 pmThis has been, by far, the sweetest vehicle I have ever owned. Nothing has gone wrong in over 200k miles. Not even any rattles or squeaks. It drives like the day I drove it home from the dealer. It does have a few design problems, but otherwise it is a great vehicle. Anti-slip device can be hazardous when pulling into traffic from a snow-covered side street. I have been stranded in the middle of a main road with no power for 2-3 seconds after leaving a snow-covered side street. When this device engages, it drastically reduces power to the drive wheels. Works great when you are at speed, but when trying to quickly slip into traffic, it can be a problem. This device cannot be shut off.
