Overview & Reviews
For 1998, the Toyota 4Runner gets rotary HVAC controls, a new four-spoke steering wheel and revised audio control head units.
- Great looks and ground-pounding performance make the 4Runner an ideal choice for people who love the great outdoors as well as those who just want to look like they do.
- Steep price and choppy highway ride temper our enthusiasm for this otherwise outstanding truck.

Great Car - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By Grant - December 22 - 12:20 pmBought this truck with 30,000 miles and have over 140,000 miles on it now. Had to replace rear axle seals at 50,000 miles, other than that has had ZERO problems (mechanical or otherwise). Just do regular maintenance and the truck runs and runs! 4WD works great in bad weather, and truck tows strong. Interior, switches, gauges, and controls have all held up great (leather seats & motors, window controls & motors, AC, heater, CD, all power equipment, etc.) Will definitely buy another 4Runner!

gentle beast! - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By willowvt - December 19 - 2:00 amlove this rig! even with all the SUV bashing pressure, im still proud to drive my 4Runner. rugged and high with a solid, smooth ride, its incredibly reliable and ready for anything, with never a problem! i started out leasing, and when my lease ran out i was faced with leasing the 2000 model, which had been re-styled more like a soccer mom SUV, yuk! so i bought out my lease on the 98 and now will drive it forever. it still looks/acts new at 93K miles; i do all the recommended maintenance and all ive replaced is tires and waterpump! and even after 6 winters in vt, still no sign of rust! wow

My Baby! - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By Eyes of Texas - December 16 - 10:00 amMy 4-runner was a big expense, but after test driving all the other SUVs in its class, there was no comparison. Id do it again in a heartbeat. I love it!

I named her Baby - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By Marcy - October 4 - 10:00 amI purchased this vehicle because I always wanted an SUV, but I wanted something reliable! I looked at the Honda CR-V, but being a tall woman 60", I wanted something a little roomier! I Loved the 4Runner as soon as I drove it! I know it was overkill to get one so big but oh well! Im a nurse,so I travel sometimes and need safe/reliable transportation! And this is so it! What can I say, I love it!

Twelve Years Out - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By WRB - January 10 - 1:50 pmLoved this car from the day my parents got it new; I took over in 2001. For its time (gas near $1/gal, economic boom, popularity & size of SUVs exploding, but before "green" went mainstream), it got good MPGs (few less than 1998 Camry). I get close to 15 MPG with a lead foot in city driving. Ive found acceleration from a stop or from merging excellent (V6). I even contemplated putting weight in the rear to improve takeoff handling. Interior fit still tight & looks better than Tahoes up to 6 yrs newer. Only standard, elective maintenance. Bottom line: I could be driving a higher-end new or nearly new car, but this is still my first choice; & dad wants first dibs on buying it back.

Best Truck For The Money! - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By RunnerLovr - December 17 - 10:00 amI traded in my car for a 4Runner over a year ago and absolutely love it. Could use a little more power, but other than that, its perfect. I have a 3" lift and a rear locker and havent had any other SUV keep up with me. Will buy another one!

4Runner runs along! - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By Eli Fox - December 17 - 10:00 amI love my 4Runner. I almost got a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I liked this better. It has leather trimed seats, alluminum instruments, a rear spoiler, and tons of goodies.

Built to last! - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
By TonyVee - December 12 - 11:40 pmThis vehicle has the perfect mix of comfort and muscle. Its a vehicle that is just as comfortable at a formal occasion as it is off road. But by far its number one best feature is Dependability! Love this SUV!
